Confused about going to RU next year

So the whole college admissions process has been sort of a let down for me. I pretty much got wait listed to my top choices, Gettysburg, UChi, American, etc. And as of yesterday, they are not going to fall through for me. So Rutgers it is! But i have really mixed feelings and I just need some clarification. First off, I am really proud to be going to RU, and i know it carries a good name wherever you go. I also am proud to be in a Philosophy department that is really incredible. But I am really into the small school scene and im afraid of a school that has 27,000 students. Am I really going to have trouble with this, is it going to make a huge difference? I am also scared of being friends with the same people I am friends with already since im an in-state student. And listen, I am a really outgoing person, I was prom king at my school so I know I can push my boundaries to go meet new people, but I am just afraid of what can happen. Is there anybody that was in the same boat that can give me some advice? Or can anybody tell me how they enjoy rutgers socially, academically, monetarily, etc. Thank you so much.

I'm not a student --I will be in the FALL :)

But the only advice I can give is not to worry! 27,000 students does seem a bit scary. It seemed scary to me when I was considering Rutgers. But then you think about how much smaller the campus can get for you. There is the university as a whole, then the 4 campuses (Busch, Cook/Douglass, College Ave, Livingston), then the dorms -- see, it gets smaller!

You are outgoing, so that's a big plus! Get involved in activities so that you can be amongst a smaller group of students (hmm...Philosophy club, perhaps?). Are you getting housing on campus? Make friends with people on your floor! If you have signed up for housing, have you considered perhaps getting involved with "learning communities" such as "special interest housings"? *** check link below***

I hope that I somewhat helped :)

Rutgers89: Your situation is hardly unique. There are many kids who had the same experience as you, my son being one of them. He has met many people at Rutgers who were admitted to many other schools, but for a variety of reasons wound up at Rutgers. You sound positive and excited to be going there, so good for you.

Yes, you might see kids from High School, but you may or may not choose to hang out with them. Don't worry, with that many people on campus, there is plenty of opportunity to make new friends. There is so much to be involved in, theatre, sports (football!) newspaper, I think there is a TV station, etc.

Don't be so afraid of the large school atmosphere. MushaboomBlue has it right, your world will start to get smaller, by campus, by dorm, by classes. You really are not going to school across the whole university.

I think you will do just fine. Jump in, get involved, and good luck next year.
