"WHAT IS TASP?

A TASP is a six-week educational experience for high school juniors that offers challenges and rewards rarely encountered in secondary school or even college. Each program is designed to bring together young people from around the world who share a passion for learning. Telluride students, or TASPers, attend a seminar led by college and university faculty members and participate in many other educational and social activities outside the classroom.
Students attend TASPs because they want to challenge and change themselves. Telluride Association seeks students from all kinds of educational backgrounds who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and motivation, rather than prior knowledge of the seminar's subject matter. TASPers participate solely for the pleasure and rewards of learning with other intelligent, highly motivated students. The TASP offers no grades or college credit. "

Studying for finals has never worked for me. It seems it never makes me do any better. I just do the homework as it's assigned (except in calc last year....oops) and that generally prepares me well. IDK about you guys, but finals are weighted more but arranged the same way as any other test - yes, comprehensive, but it's not like you're going to have to do anything you've never ever seen before.

From the little I know, TASS is the Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (this year on African American studies). TASP is similar just that it's for juniors/rising seniors. RSI is the Research Science Institute I think and is even more difficult to get into than TASP (which isn't saying much because they both are impressive to me). National Achievement in a separate PSAT competition for African American students and I believe the standards are quite a bit lower to make commended, semi-finalist, and finalist. For example, I think to make commendation you have to score in the 94% percentile (if I remember correctly).

Hmm never heard of any of those. Now I feel kinda stupid. Sounds like great experiences.

Marmadillo...that's why CC works wonders. I started coming on here in 8th grade--when I'd never even heard of Columbia or Princeton, much less any of these summer programs.

That's why I think this forum is so awesome...great place to hear of new opportunities.

Before the school year started I thought biology was going to be an easy A, since my physical science teacher last year said it was "just memorization" lol. She was dead wrong, at least for me. Biology is by far the class I've done the most work in and I'm looking forward to it being over in about three weeks haha. But my teacher, from what I've heard, is great since she has a 99% pass rate for the AP exam (48/49 of her students passed last year). I'm just not a science/math type person...more along the lines of the humanities, though AP Euro isn't exactly my strong subject this year :)

Thanks about the APs-my school only offers I think around 10(most I can't do because they are math) Anyway I think taking four from school and studing by my self for one will be fine-its only five Aps but I live very far away- an hour and my life depends on the evil train
I am doing the Independent Studies because I am really intrested in those subjects so I don't thiink I will not get motivated also at least at my school you can do them for a grade and you need a sponser so I will have a teacher guiding me.
What about the subjects of the independent studies?
I wanted to showcase my passion for english with the fairytales-I want to study their effect in culture and true symbolism in them.
Russian Art-because well I am half russian and i would like to know more about my culture-I think I good final project would be making my own nestling doll-also with this course I wanted to show my artistic talent-not trying to brag but i have been told I have a good eye and talent

Blazer - I avoided AP Euro this year because I'm more science/math/english, lol. It's very intense at our school as well. I AM doing Gov, though (we do one semester of US gov and one semester of Comparative Gov) and it is GREAT. Bio seems to have good pass rates in general, even if the class is hard as heck - maybe people decide to take it because they're so motivated.

Yeah, maybe it's just me, but I thought this year would be very difficult in terms of me studying all the time and stuff (plus I'm taking my first AP class). But I definitely was studying more and staying up until 3 in the morning last year than I am this year and my grades, until now lol, have been pretty cool. Man, 6 AP's! Do teachers give you like an hour of homework each night in all of your classes or give you quiz every other day or somethin? Or maybe it's just prioritizing your schedule? Some people amaze me haha.

Misty - "What about the subjects of the independent studies?"

What do you mean? Like, what subjects do people usually decide to IS? At my school it's languages and Stat. I've never heard of anyone doing anything other than that. Our school offers many of the APs, though, so most people just take the class. IS is basically for people who don't have time in their schedule. More power to you for following things you love!

Blazer - umm Stat is the only thing we have a quiz in every day. We do have quite a bit of homework, but I refuse to stay up past 10 to get any of it done. I figure if I keep going after that, then the quality will go downhill. I guess it's prioritizing - English in particular, I wait until last minute because I can write out something that will get me the points but I don't have to think too hard. For a lot of our teachers, you develop a certain bond and you can say, "Hey, you know, you just assigned us a 10 page paper last week and now you want a 20 minute presentation? We have other classes - can you hold off till next week?" and they understand.

I'm a sophmore,too..but I'm graduating early..I want to join you all in the thread..lol..

Blazer- I'm in the same position, I thought that Biology was going to be an easy A, but it isn't...there is a quiz every day (I'm not exaggerating)..and she doesn't care about whether we absorb the information or not, the policy seems to be like memorize the unit in a week, spit it back out for the test, and move on..seriously, right now it is kicking my butt.. one cheek at a time..lol..your stats are great, keep doing what you are doing..and i'm also a URM..i really hope I'm a semi-finalist this year (early graduate)

Misty- your stats are good, and you can get leadership positions next year or senior year...just keep up the good work..also i'm doing independant study next year...i'm so excited, it's kind of a make your own internship type of thing..also this year i'm self studying for my APs, because it may seem like my school has lots of APs, but most of those APs are art and music related..and there are so many prerequisites, and I want to graduate early..it would just be so much better this way for me..

Marmadillo- is the gov't class heavy on the reading and memorization, like U.S. History?

marmadillio- I meant like what the majority people take for indepent studies-sorry when i wrote that I was not concentrating when I wrote that
Blazer08- i know what you mean about AP Euro I felt the same way epecially when my teacher gave my class three inch black binders filled almost to the brim with papers on the first day.
I actually am doing well in it -i think I might get a b+ or a b which is pretty good for the first term and my first AP class. I think I want to get an A- average in AP euro. My term is ending this Friday i am really freaking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To the sophomores on this thread-

What do you think your senior year schedule will look like? I was thinking of around 6 AP's but wow that sounds like way too many.

Oh and I'm taking AP Euro this year. It's a pretty difficult class, but somehow I am scraping by with an A. Our teacher gives us a lot of points for participation, LOL.

Planned Senior Year Schedule:

AP English Literature
AP American Government
AP Economics
AP Calculus AB
AP Spanish Language
Honors Physics or AP Physics, depending on junior year
PE maybe?

It's really tentative...

How difficult is AP Euro compared to AP U.S. (like in terms of material covered and memorization)? I was hoping I could possibly pull an A in AP U.S. next year. I've heard AP U.S. and AP World are the hardest of histories but I'm not sure. I was also thinking this because AP Euro is offered to sophomores in the Scholars Academy so I didn't think it would be too bad. Also, how hard is AP English Language and Composition and does it prepare you enough for the SAT Subject Test in English Literature? I'll probably take that test, Math Level I, and United States History at the end of my junior year as well.

Ooo, I forgot to add: MULTITASK. Or maybe prioritize - not sure which exactly I mean. Like, right now I'm writing a physics paper in addition to writing here. It's like, write a post, write a paragraph. I do the same sort of thing to keep my room clean, haha: read a chapter in a book, pick up 10 things from the floor. This keeps me stimulated and very concentrated on something for exactly the amount of time that I can focus.

Siren could you take a look at my resume on page 2 and offer some input? I'm just trying to get as much advice as I can.

Blazer- I'm in Honors World History (school doesn't offer AP World History)..but I'm still taking the AP test, and SAT II...based on the practice tests, both tests are easy if you know some information about World History..the main thing I have to worry about is the DBQ format...I'm not sure how AP World History is run at your school, but the tests will be easy, even if you are taking an honors class, just have to retain all the info from the first semester..

Wow-graduating early cool-random but my mom graduated early too!
What are you going to do for your independent study/intership?
Also How is it studing for AP by yorself? i am going to do that in my senior year with AP Art history
