confused about headshots

Hi, mom here. kid will likely go BA route so headshots not needed immediately but I am confused about process. How do we get the actual pictures? it looks like in checking out some headshot photographer links, we get a lot of wonderful proofs and maybe a couple of prints. is that correct? if so, where do we take the proofs to so we can get the 8 by 10 pics made up? and what is approximate cost to do so?

My D just got her headshots done. The photographer gave us about 350 digital pictures on a DVD as well as uploaded them to the reproductions dot com site. This site will print pictures for you for a fee. Our photographer cost $450 plus a make-up artist for $120. The photographer would not do the photos without using the make-up artist. The headshots are phenomenal!

You should get all the photos digitally. If not, don’t use that photographer.

We have used the same photographer for several years now and she does about 7-8 “looks” and provides about 800 shots to choose from. She sends us a disk and I download them onto my computer and then print from there. She was not required to use a makeup artist. My D did her own makeup and they turned out great.

Our DD was able to get great headshots for a lot less. She went on the websites of local talent agencies, and looked at their lists of headshot photographers they worked with. She then visited the photographers websites, and looked at the type of work they did. She found several she liked, and then contacted them.

One photographer she liked had a special deal where he would do a 2-hour photo session, but with two people. The two people split the sitting fee ($300). She teamed up with a friend, and they went together. Each only got about an hour of his time, but it was more than enough. DD did her own makeup/hair (something she’s good at) and she ended up with some really great headhots for $150. (Of course, she’ll also have to pay to have the actual headshots printed.)

I forgot to mention our headshots cost $275 and we live in the LA area
