Confused about research projects and internships

Hi,

I am a rising freshman, and Ive been looking through all the message board for college chances, and I see that all the ones that go for HYPSM always have research projects and intern ships at big important companies.

I am confused as to how they got to do those things...
Do you learn about these things when you are in high school , or do you find about them thru trolling through the internet( as I am TRYing to do)

regards,
Michael

Start with high school. Guidance Counselors are supposed to be a big help with this. Also, talk to your parents. Lots of kids I know who got really interesting internships and such did it with family connections. This does not mean your family has to be rich and famous or anything. Maybe you are interested in medicine and your folks know a local doctor who might let you trail him and work with him a bit; stuff like that. As for research, talk to your high school science department. See if they have any experience with students doing this. They are often a great guide to what to do and how to go about it. Good luck!

Thanks for your helpful reply 4th house, let’s say though that I don’t want to do research into sience, because I want to be a business analyst for example, would there be any project for someone who has that kind of aspiration or is rsearch just forthe people who want to persue careers in the fields of science?

When people talk about research, they are most often referring to science, but sure, one could also do internships in business. Research? Not so much, I don’t think. I know one kid who approached local brokerage firms and got some good internships out of it. He also looked for opportunities in various national and regional competitions, such as the Federal Reserve Challenge and others. If you school does not already have a FBLA chapter, you could start one. He did all that and will be going to UChicago this fall, possibly the top econ school in the nation. Science teachers would not be your contacts here, of course, but perhaps the GC, maybe even your math department, or if your school has teachers in accounting econ or other business-related courses.
