Well, it's almost the end of November, and I really have not started much with the application process. I have been working a long time to think of a good major, but have not been able to, and cannot pick colleges either without picking a major for myself. Currently, I have no idea where I should be applying, other than picking out schools in the top whatever. Help with that would really help as deadlines are just flying by and I'm still stuck here thinking.

First of all it’s mid-October. You just gained 5 - 6 weeks time to help you with this process.

If you’re undecided on a major…join the crowd. You are NOT alone. You do NOT (necessarily) need to know your major at this point. Yes, it helps decide on schools that are better in that area, and SOME schools will require it (one applies to NYU and has to select WHICH school within NYU and only some schools have some majors). But, overall, most schools will probably have you in mostly core curriculum classes your first year anyway. You can take something in different fields and see which “floats your boat” this year. If you’re that stuck, maybe just pick your flagship state school and get started. You could even try and transfer later if you find that is necessary. And/or…maybe you can get a well rounded liberal arts bachelor’s degree…and go on to graduate school once you’re more “centered”…and worry about a “career” choice later. This is one of the biggest reasons my D didn’t apply to Oxford. She REALLY wanted to go there. But, you pick ONE major, and that is ALL you study for your 3/4 years there. You’re obviously not ready for that. Some lucky kids have know their whole young adult life what they wanted to do. But mnost 16-18 years old did not. Besides, no matter what you pick, the best money would be bet on the fact that you will a.) change that major, and then b.) Not work in that field anyway. So…no suggestions as you don’t say much about yourself. But…pretty much ANY continuing education is better than none. Hop on it though, especially if you’re looking for scholarships. Some application processes are brutal, and you need to get your apps in early for scholarship consideration, before they’ve committed all their 2010-2011 funds. Good luck. Whatever you decide, it’s all good. It will all work out.

Since you are undecided, as many seniors are, just apply to your top 3-4 state schools that offer a quality liberal arts education at reasonable cost…ones that offer a wide variety of majors. Stop procrastinating…fill out the apps, check off ‘undecided’ as your major, write an essay and send them in. At least the ball will be rolling and you will have some peace of mind knowing you will be going SOMEwhere. You can then relax and research further into possible majors you might want to switch to once you get in. Start today! :)
