Everyone at my school who got into UCLA got into UCSD. I was the only one who got rejected to UCLA and into UCSD. They don’t compare notes. They aren’t even organized enough to make sure not one SIRs to two schools.

for the record, what i have heard from people who called admissions, the point system is no longer being used (or possibly not guillotining students early on – i could be wrong though). I heard they are holistically reviewing the applicant, paying close attention to GPA, EC’s (very very important) and the essay. Personally, I am glad to see this, about time the SAT didn’t ruin students chances. I was accepted with a 4.6 W GPA, 1920 SAT, a great essay, and a few ECs - of which I was highly committed to and depicted hundreds of hours of community volunteer work and leadership roles (I didn’t have many EC’s, but the ones I chose to add, I was devoted to whole-heartedly).

I think they are looking to accept more well rounded students that depict good things across the board (in know way am i trying to brag, thats just my “straight” opinion).

I call BS on that. UCSD is simply using the same internal weighting system and either 1) not overtly putting points to it, or 2) is still using the same points as always, just not publishing it on the web or in discussions with waitlisted or rejected applicants.

You don’t develop a system over several years, and then POOF, scrap it. They’re simply putting the point system underground. The point system WAS holistic. The only part missing was points assigned to the essay. Every other part of it was in fact quite holistic, as academic stats alone (GPA, 5 SATs, # of a-g courses) only got an applicant, at best, to about 95% of the minimum points needed for admission. I never understood why they published it in the first place … they were the only one of the Top 100 colleges that actually put their point system (EVERY college uses some form of weighting, or points) in writing

Sorry about your son, but welcome to college admissions. Its just crazy and nothing will EVER make sense.

When I applied 2 years ago, I had Santa Barbra and Riverside as my safety schools and applied to all the big UCs. I ended up getting accepted to Cal, rejected from LA, accepted to SD, rejected from Irvine, accepted to Riverside, and got rejected from SB. (My stats are in a super old post so search for it if you want).

In any case, you should NEVER take any school for granted unless they sent you a letter saying they’d accept you if you applied (which is what Riverside did for me). The admissions process is crazy and a lot of it is subjective

way to take me completely out of context…reference the second part of that exact statement "(or possibly not guillotining students early on – i could be wrong though)…

what i stated, came from a person that had a direct conversation with reps at UCSD.
