wow, today was harsh. i heard of a LOT of high ranking, high GPA, high scoring (including National Merit Finalist) people got rejected from san diego.

anyone else questioning their rejection, like myself? (i wasn't planning on attending, but i'm still curious)

not to be mean, but looking at your post history, your scores are a little below average for UCSD admitted students. certainly, you were in the range of people who might have been accepted, but you weren't at close to the guaranteed range.

glue! are you talking about me? or prolixity? im pretty sure my scores are higher than the average sd student - not trying to be cocky, but yeah.

still so bitter haha im thinking ill need to hire a psychologist.

yeah me too. extremely picky. but i mean, its not even pickiness, its them picking applicants with lower stats, ecs than those with higher stats/ecs. i am not generalizing, because right now i am actually applying this to personal experience. about 5 of my friends got in with around 1700, 3.5, fair ecs.

Yeah. Most of the people I asked at school were rejected... I only found 5 others who were accepted (and I'm from a school that has 950+ seniors)... crazy.

gogogo - why dont you send an appeal letter to sd telling them you got accepted to cornell but rather go to sd? that would be quite effective imo.

well they wont really look at that. i called the admissions lady myself and she said there had to be an administrative mistake, like missing scores, etc. merely me wanting to go wont convince them- supposedly there has to be some 'merit' involved .

im kinda getting over it anyway (or at least, im trying to). if they dont want me, then thats fine. i dont want to waste my time appealing (esp since its not certain ill get in) when other colleges are willing to take me without me having to prompt them etc.

Im pretty sure the rejection of top students is not correlated to administrative errors. There has to be some other reason.
Perhaps they are trying to get a increased amount of students from underrepresented areas?
Basically it might be they are trying to get some kind of diverse (not ethnically) group rather than a elite group in their school.
Ive heard that the admissions people change their preferences for their student body from year to year. For example one year they might want to get the top students period. While other years they might focus on EC's more. At least that's how I heard admissions works and I guess this theory can kind of explain this ostensibly random rejections of top kids.

Well, a high SAT score is not everything. I got a 2100 (out of state) and I got in, but in comparison to people from school, I feel like a 2100 is pretty mediocre =/

i don't understand why people who question why they didn't get admitted just call ucsd and ask them for the amount of points they recieved in the admissions process.

they'll also tell you the cut off and will pretty much let you know why you didn't get in.

I'm not bsing it, I'm reading through 9 pages of the "rejection" thread and pulling out a pattern. And also, if anyone calls, I would really like to know the cut off point this year so I can advise my friend whether or not to appeal.
