I'm going into my junior year and would greatly appreciate answers to any of the following

Everyone says how important the College Essay is, but they don't really give much information about it. How do you write a good one? What does a good College Essay sound like? What are they about? How long are they? Is it ok to write them in first person? What does a bad college essay look like?

Thank you

Is this a joke? oh well, i’ll take it seriously.

The ultimate goal in the essay is twofold
- Why you want to go to college X.
- Why you are qualified to go to college X.

Now i will try to answer each question.

How do you write a good one?
Dude. It’s just writing. Chill. Do some soul searching.

What does a good College Essay sound like?
It is important that the essay has your personality. The college wants to know that you are a match for them. Many people would say that a good college essay sounds more like creative writing than academic writing.

What are they about?
Some colleges will have specific essay prompts; “Tell us about a memorable experience that influenced you.” Some will be completely open ended (such as William and Mary). for the open ended one, you need to find a way to show why you are special, it’s often an opportunity to show of unique style.

How long are they?
usually they will give you a minimum or maximum limit. about 500-1000 words, about 1 page. Shorter is usually better, given that you can express everything and answer the question in that time

Is it ok to write them in first person?
It kind of depends on the question. Usually you can use the 1st person.

What does a bad college essay look like?
Stiff. Formal. Boring. Generic. Overly Factual.

If you want to see one of mine feel free to PM me. (I got accepted to 6 universities, rejected from 4)

Alright thanks for clearing that up :)
