Confused

I am confused as to where I stand with respect to the Honors Program, as I:

got an e-mail from the Global Scholars Program saying that I was accepted to the program and that it is in the honors college

received a honors college rejection letter

am attending Merit Weekend this weekend

am a NMF

Understand your confusion. It’s my understanding that Global Scholars Program is an honors program within the Gatton College of Business. I think it is separate from the university honors college. It seems Many majors have their own scholars program within their own college/department. Merit weekend is a great opportunity to clarify. I know we have a list of questions to ask.

Here are some quotes from the Global Scholars acceptance:

“The Global Scholars Program is a special track within the prestigious University of Kentucky Honors Program”

“Additionally, as a member of the highly selective University of Kentucky Honors Program, you will pursue opportunities for undergraduate research with top scholars, education abroad around the world, and engagement with service-learning in your community. You will enjoy a flexible curriculum that enriches every field of study and that challenges you through interaction with motivated peers and premier faculty. Finally, the Honors Program at UK will serve as your pathway to other challenging experiences, including the Gaines Fellowship Program, the Chellgren Fellowship for Undergraduate Excellence, and preparation for competitive awards such as the Truman, Marshall, and Rhodes scholarships.”

AND THE MOST CONFUSING ONE:
“And please note that you will be receiving an additional official acceptance letter in the mail from the Honors Program in the very near future.”

@SurvivorFan, that is a confusing set of mixed messages. On your myuk site, when you look at your profile on the myInfo tab, what is listed next to “status” under the residency information? Also, have you applied to a Living Learning Program and did you hear back on the status of that?

OP, I don’t understand the tone and implications in the letter you received. It sounds very confusing.

But if you read the materials on the Gatton Scholars and their FAQ etc.,it is clear that U Kentucky Honors is distinct from this program, though some students participate in both. I know of someone who last year was accepted into the Global Gatton Scholars program, a NMF like yourself, and who similarly was rejected from the general honors program. He appealed unsuccessfully. He was OOS, had visited and was very enthusiastic about the school, but ended up attendig elsewhere, partly because of the honors rejection.

@celesteroberts

I called the Honors Program and they said that if I had been accepted to the program, I am in the Honors College, but they would have to confirm that I am actually in the program. That was yesterday afternoon, but I have not yet heard back.

OP, That’s great. They may have changed policy since last year. It sounds like a good program. I hope the honors college acceptance comes through for you. My friend(mother of student I mentioned) will be unhappy that they didn’t get that chance, but oh well. Maybe they had other cases like that that brought on a change.I’m interested to hear how it turns out.

If I am not in the honors college, it is off my radar completely. If I am in it, I don’t know, but I will have a better idea after Merit Weekend this weekend. I have never been to the Commonwealth of Kentucky, let alone the University, so I have no idea what to expect.

Did you find out what you needed to know, @SurvivorFan?

Yes, I am in the honors college, and this is the first year that the Global Scholars is officially part of the Honors College. As for my decision, I still am seriously considering 6-8 schools.

Congratulations, @SurvivorFan. Good luck with your decision. Sounds like you have a tough decision among several great schools. I think we can expect great things from you in the future…
