I'm going through the college process now, but I have a little sister who's into sports. And I've always been confused about the role of sports in college admissions, especially selective ones like yale. My sister's in 10th grade, and is a nationally-ranked tennis player. She does well academically, but doesn't perform at the level of most Yale admits that I've seen on these boards. She took the SATs and received a little above 2000. Just out of curiosity, how much does being nationally-ranked at tennis affect admissions? I stopped sports after middle school, and have since regretted it because I've been under the impression that if you're great at sports, you don't have to have the academic qualifications of the usual qualified applicant to get in. Is this true?

yes, that is correct. For the Ivy league, you need to be at a much higher academic level than the rest of the Division 1 schools other than Stanford, but yes, the academic requirements are different, and you don't need to be at the level of the Yale admits who don't have a hook. But fyi, many athletes are stellar students too, and manage both.
