Confusion about athletics and committing to a team

Fall 2011, I was offered a spot on a sports team of a Div I school. I was told that if I wanted to join the team for sure, I had to do the Early Decision application. I told him I would not do that, and applied to the school through the Regular Decision application and did not list myself as an athlete.

A few weeks ago, I was accepted into the university. In the acceptance package, it noted that all my tuition/housing deposit fees were waived. There was nothing in the acceptance package about athletics.

About two weeks later, the coach emailed me (and spelled my name wrong...) and asked if I was still interested in joining the team.

How does this athletic business work? Did I get accepted to the school on the condition that I join the team? Aren't there other things involved, such as a contract or letter of intent? I did not receive anything during the Regular Decision process from the coach.

I have called the admissions office, but I am still waiting on their response. They said this was a weird situation and that they would do research first...

For any athletes reading this - did your acceptance packages have any mention of athletics or committing to the team? Mine did not.

Sounds like you were accepted on your own merits, and you got substantial aid based on need or merit.

Agree with Oldbatesie, it appears you got into the college without any athletic involvement, the coach must know you have been accepted and is touching base to see if you are interested in doing the sport. If you were going in as a recruited student athlete you would have signed a national letter of intent during the period of time for your sport. (I don’t know how Ivy’s work). So basically you ought to touch base with the coach and make a decision if you want to play or not.
