I'll be majoring in ECE at Cornell and have some confusion regarding credit transfer from GCE A Level and course selection. I have taken Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths at A Level. I got A* in Maths and will hopefully get A* in Physics, Chemistry and Further Maths. Based on that, and information from these sites ( Cornell Engineering: Engineering Handbook 2012 Advanced Placement or Transfer Credit and Cornell Engineering: Grades and Credit ), I think I will receive credit for MATH 1910, CHEM 2090, PHYS 1112 and PHYS 2213. So, for the first semester I plan to take MATH 1920, PHYS 2214, CS 1112, PE 1185, ENGRG 1012 and use my blogging instead of the FWS classes. I may also take ART 2701. I am asking if the course selection is okay based on my A Level grades and the credits I hope to receive.

That schedule looks good to me (rising senior ECE major) - are you sure you don’t want to get into a lower-level ECE class though, perhaps instead of 2214 since you’re already a year ahead basically? It’s always an option - a suggestion would be Digital Logic (ECE 2300). It’s up to you, though - either way looks good (not easy, but appropriately challenging). The reason I suggest it is because it can be an early insight into the major, so that way you can really see if ECE is for you before a lot of other students do.

Also, if you have any more questions about ECE, I’d be happy to answer them!

Hello livychan, I can place out of exactly the same courses TomAhmed can and I’m an aspiring ECE major as well but I’m not sure if skipping Phys 2213 is a good idea. I skimmed through the Young and Freedman book and I can say I know most of the content, the only thing is that A-levels didn’t deal with the calculus aspect of Electromagnetism. And it seems to me this makes a bulk of the course. Hence my dilemma, should I skip this course or take it? I’ve had conflicting advise on this, some upperclassmen go with the usual statement “skip everything skippable” while some others say to take it. I have no info on my faculty advisor yet so I can’t contact. Any suggestions? And I see CS 1112 on your list Tom, wouldn’t the python course be more appropriate for an ECE major?

I want to be done with physics before I start with the ECE courses. I plan to take ECE 2300 second semester. I’m not worried about early insight into ECE as I’m currently very involved in electronics and there’s no chance of me not majoring in ECE.

Lelyke,
Hi! I’ve read on other threads where other seniors have said to skip PHYS 2213 and have said that whatever is required will be covered again in the specific ECE courses. Also, if you’ve applied calculus in any of the “applied math” modules (for me, I had it in M3 and M4; btw I did Edexcel A Levels), calculus application should be no problem. I’ve gone through the “University Physics” book and there isn’t anything you can’t quickly self-learn when necessary. So, it’s better to skip PHYS 2213 and revise the material later if/when necessary.

As I’m more inclined to the just electronics part, than the computer part, I’ve been told that MATLAB can be more useful. I know Visual BASIC and a little of C, so I’m not worried about computer programming. Hence, I feel that MATLAB would be more useful.

So I personally say skip what you can because I’ve never known anybody that’s regretted it, and it is true that important concepts will be reviewed in classes that use it. That said, I really liked 2213 because I took it concurrently with Circuits (ECE 2100) and it made most of physics easy-peasy. But if I had the chance, I probably would’ve skipped it.

It doesn’t matter too much if you take Python vs MATLAB because you’ll take the “transition” class the next semester. I personally found Java to be helpful because it’s similar to a lot of other languages so it’s come in handy. Now they have Python instead of Java, but I think the same idea applies. You will use MATLAB in ECE classes but really you won’t be at a disadvantage either way.

This is what I planned on taking first semester, Math 1920, Phys 2213, ENGRG 1050, CS 1110, an FWS and a P.E. So I guess I can replace Phys 2213 with an ENGRI class right? maybe ECE 1210. I prefer to take it easy this semester instead of diving into HL courses like some freshmen do, since I’m still acclimatizing to college.

That looks good to me! When your advisor is assigned, always feel free to contact them to make sure you’re on track. And if you have any more questions about ECE or anything, feel free to message me or post on this thread!!

One thing I’ve noticed is that Chequerd mentions CS 1110 as Java, and not Python. But the Cornell site says Python. I’m going by what the Cornell site says, but why does Chequerd mention Java?

Hi Lelyke and TomAhmed, what are the subjects you have taken ultimately in 1st and 2nd semester? How is the going? What about the grading? It is said that Cornell is having grade deflation system? How tough is Lab report? Hope, by this time you have acquainted with the system and moving smoothly.
