This is something that you guys might find interesting. UVA's literary journal, the Virginia Quarterly Review, ranks as one of the best magazines in the country. Yesterday, the VQR (which has only 4 full-time staff members and a circulation of 7,000) won 2 National Magazine Awards (a.k.a. the "Ellies" - the Oscars of the magazine world). The other magazines that tied for wins w/ the VQR were Harper's, New York, and The New Yorker.

By the way, this was after the VQR was nominated for 6 awards, which was more than the perrenial powerhouses (i.e. National Geographic, Time, Newsweek, and The New Yorker). Only Harper's had more nominations than the VQR.

Kudos to Ted Genoways who took over the VQR 3 years ago and who got his MFA in Creative Writing at UVa. It was during his graduate days at UVa that he founded another award-winning literary journal at the University - Meridian.
