Hi Doc,

I have my congressional interview this monday the 22nd, and I was wondering if you could give me any good advice on how to act, dress, speak, etc. Anything would be great, I just want to make sure I am prepared.

Thanks

Use "sir" and "ma'am" a lot. Look your interviewers directly in the eye. don't say, "Ya know?" Khakis, a nice shirt and a tie are always a good choice for clothes. Make sure they fit and aren't hanging off your a$%. Wear a belt. Know as much about USAFA as you can. Be sincere, honest, and succinct. Brief, clear and to the point. Remember, you enjoy challenges, you're flexible, and can handle the unknown and uncertainty. You're calm, cool, and can't be rattled. It's okay to not be decisive about what you want to major in or do in the Air Force. What is important is that you accept what the Academy has to offer, are willing to work hard, and understand that the overwhelming number of opportunities that face you are just that: opportunities. You'll make good choices and keep doors open so that you can learn, serve, and excel.

Be humble. Don't preach. Don't get political or religious. Don't kiss butt. Remind them that you're not a "common" high school student and you're choosing USAFA because you don't want to be a common college student. You want something more, and USAFA and the Air Force offer that "something!"

(let me know how it goes!)

FYI
Most of the nomination interview candidates in our district wore sportcoats, a nice touch if you have one.
Don't wear sneakers.
Make sure your clothes are ironed. One candidate looked as if he had slept in his clothes, and his hair had been combed with a "mixmaster". I don't think he made a good first impression.

Be able to tell them why you want to go to USAFA...that matters a lot!

Are there any candidates out there that have done them yet and can atest to some of the questions they will ask?

Thanks again

I had mine a few weeks ago. Just be comfortable with your activities and reasons for wanting to go and you will be fine.
