My Ds is going to the connect with tech on Sunday/Monday. I was wondering if anyone else here was going or if someone had gone before and what they thought of it.

My son went last fall and thoroughly enjoyed it - felt confident about his chances for admission after spending a few days with similar prospective students (still shaking our heads). My son and another kid slept on the couch of some fraternity while the students played games all night - he was facinated they could do this and still be successful in their studies. I’m guessing this is their stress release. Your son will have a good time and get an idea of the environment around the campus which is remarkably much nicer looking inside out than outside in.

We got back from Connect with tech. It sealed the deal for my son, he has decided for sure he is going to GT. The opportunities at GT for the students are awesome.Yes the work load is going to be hard but he believes that it will be worth it.:)

Congratulations! I’m sure it’s a relief to have the decision out of the way.

My son is going to Connect with Tech on Mar 10-11. I really hope he loves it! Right now he is choosing between University of Maryland and Georgia Tech. We live very close to UMD. I am praying he chooses Tech. What an opportunity that would be for him! Can somebody tell me a bit more about what to expect when we head down there on the 10th? THANKS

My D is also going on March 10th and she is very excited! We are from Ohio. Piggybacking on to what shaversack asks, what should we check out near campus to get the full experience? We are definitely planning to go to Atlantic Station.

This is the way it went for us in Feb it was for admitted students. Once you check in they will have some current students that you can talk to until everyone is there. It’s a good time to get their perspective on GT. We ended up talking to a student that was in the co-op program. We liked what he had to say. Once everyone is checked in they took us to Clough where they gave us an introduction to some of the current students. The kids and parents were then split up. We did not see our son until the next day after 10:00 am. He didn’t tell me everything he did but I know that they went on a campus tour, ate dinner, spent time with his host and learned about tech. The next day he had breakfast, went to a class. They were able to pick the class they wanted to go to. He picked physics.

After the kids left they broke us up into groups and we went on a bus tour of the campus. We got to see both a regular dorm room and the apartment style dorm room. Also we got to talk to an honors student. After the tour we had a question and answer session with some students. It was very informative. They had light food for us and we were able to talk to some current students parents. Again it was nice to hear their point of view.

The next morning they had breakfast for us. We ate before so I’m not sure what it was I think donuts, bagel & coffee? Then they had a information session on the next steps for admitted students. After that we did rotations and went to different colleges information sessions depending on what your child was interested in you had time for two of them.(Architecture, business, computing, engineering, liberal arts, sciences) That’s when the parents met back up with their kids. Then they had interest sessions again you could pick 2(financing your education, parenting a college student, study abroad, first year @ tech). next was lunch then more interest sessions pick 2 (coop and internships, safety & security, undergraduate research) then you were done and able to leave or explore the campus.

I highly recommend going to it.

MichiganGeorgia- may I ask- what other schools was your S considering, and what did he like most about GT? GT is my D’s top choice so far, but she’s still waiting on some RD schools. Thanks.

Sounds good. My son was accepted at Tech, University of MD and Marquette. He was deferred from University of Chicago and Tulane. I think he wants to go to UMD, but I think GT would be so much better for him. We live in Maryland. Thanks for sharing!

@Neenie - First I need to say my son was trying to get the best merit aid he could so he applied to and was accepted into quite a few schools. So here’s the list of schools he was accepted at in random order. UGA(Honors),Purdue,LSU(Honors),Clemson(Honors),Auburn(Honors),Ohio State,Indiana University(Honors), Michigan Tech,Colorado School of Mines,Iowa(Honors),University of South Carolina(Honors),University of Alabama(Honors)University of Alabama- Birmingham,Mississipi State,University of South Florida(honors),University of Minnesota… I think there are 2 more but I’m having trouble remembering them…

The above schools are good schools. I think he could have been happy at any of them. Here are the main reasons he picked GT.
- he wants to study abroad. GT has many choices for that.
- he wants to do research. he should be able to do that at GT
- he would like to do either internship or co-op - they have these and hopefully he will be able to do one or the other.
- they have all the majors he wants and they are ranked really well.
- We live in Georgia. My husband works downtown. So while DS will live on campus if he wants to he can meet dad for lunch or come home and visit for a few hours.
- His high school has a number kids that are either already at GT or are going there. He knows about 12 kids from his class that are going there and most likely there will be more than that.
- Georgia has the Hope and ZEll Miller scholarship so he will have free tutition for at least the first year. He has to keep a 3.3 gpa to keep the free tuition or a 3.0 for a good reduction on tuition.

Over all he really liked what he has heard about GT and thought it was the best choice for him.

Thanks for all of the good info MichiganGeorgia! That is a very impressive list of schools for your S! It sounds like Georgia Tech is a very good match for his interests. My D is very interested so far with GT and excited about visiting again. We are from Ohio, and GT is not very well known in our area. GT is her top choice so far, but she is waiting to hear from Northwestern and Columbia. I just have this gut feeling that she is going to really fall in love with GT during the Connect with Tech weekend. We were so impressed with the school when we visited last Spring. One negative from our visit last year though was that the city seemed dead- we were staying near CCN Center and our hotel and the surrounding area were deserted. Is this the norm or did we just pick a normally quieter time (Spring break)? My D wants to have the “big city experience.”

Needie, I’m not exactly sure what you mean about 'big city experience". We lived in Chicago for a number of years. So it know Northwestern would fit the bill. Atlanta is not usually dead . I don’t drive into Atlanta myself because it’s too busy perhaps you came on an odd weekend?

Yes, downtown Atlanta is dead at night! Especially around CNN Center, unless there is a basketball game or some other event. Atlanta has some really cool neighborhoods intown (these are considered close-in, but not downtown): Virginia Highlands, Midtown, Decatur, East Atlanta…all these would be really fun for a college student or visiting family, but downtown iteself, boring! Your D would not have a “big city” experience like she would in NYC or Boston. You pretty much need to have a car in Atlanta to get around. They do have Marta (the subway), but it is very limited.
