Conservatism at Dartmouth

I was unaware that Dartmouth had a particular reputation for being a conservative-leaning school. Is this true? Comments?

I saw a poll that said that 70%+ of dartmouth students identified themselves as liberal. However, I think dartmouth probably has a little more political/cultural balance than many other top schools.

There have been a number of threads on this topic in the past. What I was able to gather from them is that dartmouth is a bit more well-rounded in terms of individual students and the student-body as a whole in political--and many other--matters.

My own feeling is that dartmouth breeds sincerity in many different ways: less affectation--more honesty and less PC; I think it has to do with the fresh air and beautiful surroundings of Hanover New Hamshire and Dartmouth itself.

I've read that many political representations, including Republican, Democrat, and Green Party, are very vocal.

By conservative...people mean not wackly left-leanining "I"m not a Democrat cause they're too conservative!!" (BTW..I'm a partisan Dem)

Conservatives are both greater in number and more vocal than at D-Mouth's peer institutions. That's not saying much...the Prez got something aroud 7% in Cambridge...so..yeah.

People are very open-minded at Dartmouth...so people won't hate you for being a conservative...at least I won't!!

Dartmouth is actually about 75-80% liberal, about in line with Penn, Northwestern, Cornell, and more liberal than Duke/ Princeton (which arent conservative either). There was an article in the 2000 election along the lines of "Dartmouth overwhelmingly favors Gore." If I remember correctly, even Nadar gave Bush a run for his money.

There is a conservative "clique" but that's exactly what they are and they hang out with many liberals (they like to get together and argue.) People are pretty tolerant of everyone (unlike other schools). Its kind of how it should be.

I would say a GREAT majority of my friends are liberal, in fact I know during the 2000 election at least it was broadcast in the student center and literally there were 90% cheers when Gore won.
