How liberal?

I am interested in Political Science and Government, and I believe that I would do better at a school that leans toward similar opinions as myself. Is Dartmouth more liberal or conservative?

Dartmouth is known to be the most conservative ivy relative to its peers. However, its peer schools are all EXTREMELY liberal. So, I believe Dartmouth is more “center left.” You find some conservatives on campus, but it still is predominately left wingers.

rtgrove is pretty much right. I would say there is a small pocket of true conservatives (albeit an active group), and lots of libritarians and liberals. There’s also a fair number of students who just don’t seem all that concerned with politics.

I’m waiting to hear back from D’mouth, but from what I’ve heard kids are generally plugged into politics/current events. The majority of students are liberal but there definitely is an undercurrent of old money New Englandy, William F. Buckley conservatives. Btw, (I’m assuming you’re a junior), interviewers have been really impressed when I’ve asked about a college’s political alignment.

Okay, thank you very much!

I don’t know that the liberal/conservative split is all that important. It’s definitely liberal but as radical as some at Berkeley in the 60s, no. I think the isolation of the school and the importance of the frats with all that entails as has been commented upon endlessly is something to be a lot more concerned about. If you don’t like hanging out in frat basements with a bunch of drunks the conventional wisdom seems to be, don’t go there. Oh yes, there are those that say there are alternatives but bottom line, that is their rep and many are quite proud of it. Very disconcerting, IMO.

gekkoman: I find your comment a bit disconnected with both the topic of the thread, and the atmosphere at Dartmouth. Yes, Greek life is big here. But Greek life is far from the one dimensional drunk frat-basement image. In addition, many students here choose not to rush and still have amazing Dartmouth experiences. I could elaborate on this, but it seems off topic.

Yes, I agree about being off topic–my apologies.

…um, yeah.

The liberal/conservative split may not be very important to you, but it is something that I definitely wanted to take into consideration.
