Considering Joining a Sorority

I black girl considering joining one of the predominantly white sororities on campus; just because they are more visible. Is that something that is typically done and would I get into one?

Typical no, but several Panhell sororities have black sisters. Some are more diverse than others.

It’s becoming increasingly more common. One thing is for certain … you certainly won’t get a bid if you don’t go through recruitment! Be sure to get your recommendations, keep your social media clean, and keep your options open.

Most schools now use a formula to get every woman who wants a bid a bid, and the formula does really work.

Recommendations are not necessary and will likely not help at UNC so don’t stress about that. Recruitment can be stressful and many ladies drop. I would encourage you to participate in recruitment. There are no guarantees of making a match or a match that you want. Be yourself, have fun and see how it goes. It will be hot and a lot of walking over Labor Day weekend. Make sure to apply, pay the fee and send a headshot/resume before the deadline and fee increase. Sororities can be middle of the road in terms of cost at UNC and most require you to participate in at least some form of a meal plan at the house. Some people have sticker shock at the price but less than half the cost of BAMA and way more than UNCC and App State. FYI living in a sorority house is less than a dorm or apartment in Chapel Hill.
