I got accepted and plan to attend UNC next fall as an incoming freshman! I wanted to rush and join a sorority but have no information over UNC's sororities at all! If anyone wants to let me in on which ones are the "better" houses, or which each one of them are known for, or their philanthropies, it would be much appreciated! Also, how does rush work at UNC, is it just a week long, or two weeks? Any information is great, thanks!

Here is the link for the UNC Panhellenic Council: [UNC Panhellenic -](http://www.uncpanhellenic.com) It contains everything you need to know about the sororities on campus. Remember that just because a sorority is awesome at one school, that doesn’t necessarily mean it has that same reputation at ALL schools. The best way to find a sorority that is great for you is to trust the rush process, talk to the girls in each of the sororities, and to go with where you feel most comfortable. It’s a mutual selection process.

Both my daughters are in (different) sororities. One went the traditional route and rushed her first year and the other joined her sorority 2nd semester during spring rush. Both are extremely happy. It’s a great way to make friends with common interests and to have that sense of belonging on a big campus.

Traditional (1st semester) rush lasts about a week – usually over Labor Day weekend. It is a great way to meet other girls and to visit all of the sororities. The rush process is designed to match you up with the best fit. It’s best to go in with an open mind and to trust the process, believe me. It can be very stressful, hectic, and very hot but definitely worth it in the end.

Oops–that should be www.greenrank.com (not rate!)

When you rush you’ll tour all the houses so you’ll be able to get a feel of them. The houses make a bid on you so the house you want might not be the one you get.

It’ll be hard to get an unbiased answer from someone about the different houses.

I would stay away from talk of the “better” houses, etc.

I know this advice had zero weight when I was on the receiving end of it, but TRUST ME. I have some friends who dismissed the “lesser” sororities just because of one thing one person said and were either miserable in their respective ones or dropped. There are bad and good things to be said about all of them.

There is no such thing as popularity in a college this big. No one cares. You’re best avoiding all the rankings or rumors and just going with the one that makes you happy.

Also, I don’t know what it is that has people thinking that the rush process is only about the rushee picking a house. Sororities also have to pick you, and to be honest, it’s probably more skewed on that end due to sheer number of people that rush. The way the process works, unfortunately, only allows for a very superficial run through and if you become way too caught up in reputations or specifics as opposed to making real connections with the girls, they see straight through that.

Good luck though! Going greek at UNC is super fun, but there are also plenty of opportunities if not. That’s one of the things I love about this place- no one side of the scene dominates the other.
