Considering transfering after freshman year

Hello,

I am a high school senior, considering attending Elon University in the Fall. I've been admitted and have visited the university twice now. I think the school has a number of things going for it, among them being the fact that the campus is absolutely gorgeous, and that they seem to be a real up-and-coming school. At the same time, I'm just not sure the academic caliber of the school is where I'd be most comfortable, and I get the impression that it is a very party-heavy school, which would be a turn off for me. It's also kind of in the middle of nowhere, and while, again, it is gorgeous, I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with that after a few months, having spent all of my life in a major city.

When I started the college process I was certain I wanted to study business. I go to a private school doesn't give GPA's, but I got mostly B's with some A's and C's scattered throughout. Thus, when I started the process, my college advisor pointed me towards a number of schools in the academic range of Elon or lower, most of which I can't even remember now, that had a somewhat reputable undergraduate business program.

Skip ahead a few months, and I'm now not sure I'm where I'd like to be. I was accepted at Elon, Babson, and IU Kelley. I hated IU, was interested in Babson, and gave my thoughts about Elon above. However, at this point I'm not certain what I want to study. I know I want to end up in business, and would be majoring in something business-related (probably economics). My real qualm, however, is that I'm not really excited about any of the schools I was accepted to. I thought Babson sounded very cool, but I fear that going there might end up being redundant, as I will probably get my MBA at some point down the road, and the Babson undergraduate program is really just an enhanced MBA curriculum. It is also incredibly expensive. Tuition money isn't a critical issue, but to put down 50,000+ a year on something of questionable value that I'm not certain I'd enjoy is something I'm hesitant to do.

So I'm considering going to Elon for my first year, and applying out. My question is somewhat three-fold here. First off, is this plan just fundamentally problematic? I'm guessing I would be able to get something close to a 4.0 there, but what would that realistically open up for me? My SAT scores are 1520/2290 (do I have to retake them?). Second, assuming I could transfer, should I? Am I underselling Elon? Does it hold a higher intellectual caliber than I assigned it? Third, assuming transfering is a good idea, and I could actually pull it off, where would be a good fit for me? I'm not looking to study at an Ivy, but one tier below wouldn't be out of the question (Something like Georgetown, for instance).

Basically, I'm realizing that I may have entirely changed my mind about what I want out of my undergraduate experience a few months too late. My high school grades were average, and consequently I think I looked at schools I may not be challenged by academically. I was sure I wanted to study hard business, and I'm now reconsidering that as well.

So, thoughts?

(tl;dr: Considering attending Elon, transfering to somewhere in Georgetown range academically sophmore year, interested in Business/Economics, HS doesn't give GPA, but mostly B's, 1520/1600 or 2290/2400 SATs. Good or Bad idea?)

I advise you not to go into it with the attitude that you’re just going to transfer. Forget about it for the time being, get involved and make friends at Elon. If, after your freshman year, you still want to transfer, then go for it. If you want your college grades to be the ones most considered you’ll have to work extra hard and wait until sophomore year.
