Considering UCLA, USC...

Hello, I am looking for advice and opinions for everyone out there would stop by and read this post. I have looked into various schools (specifically the UC system) and it seems that a UC school would best fit my needs. The following is a collection of my high school career:

4.12 UC GPA, roughly 3.9 GPA (9th-11th grades) Currently in the 11th grade
SAT Scores: CR: 580/ Math: 530/ Writing: 560 (I will fix them by taking the ACT instead <aiming for="" 30="">)
Extracurriculars: M.E.S.A. member (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement)
Volunteer at Elementary School
(prospective math tutor at high school)</aiming>

Planned Course Schedule:

English: Eng 9, Eng 10, AP English Language, Advanced Compostion, Creative Writing

Math: Algebra 1 (honors), Geometry, Algebra 2, Math Analysis (honors, precalculus), Calculus 1 and 2 (not sure about multivariable calculus) at community college.

Science: ICS (intercoodinated science), Biology (intro to bio at community college),
AP Chemistry, Physics (honors), Calculus-based Physics: Mechanics(1) // Electricity and Magnetism(2) at community college

Social Science/ History: Global Studies, World History, US History, Government/Economics (honors)

Foreign Language: Spanish 1 and 2

Electives: Keyboard 1 (piano), Intro to Computers, Computer Programming, PE 1 and 2, Life Skills, Health, Service, Tutor, Civil Engineering

I am interested in pursuing a career in engineering, math, physics, or related field.

Now that you a little about me, I would appreciate any advice or opinions you may have: What should i improve on? What is my likelyhood of being accepted to USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo).

Thank you for your time. :)

You’re looking good for your UC’s and Cal Poly. Get the SAT/ACT score up. Maybe one more year of spanish since 3 is recommended?

I would reccommend some more EC’s, or just work really hard at your volunteering.

If you are considering USC or UCLA then you def. need to get your scores up

You probably know this xxsteelxx… but the way your question is worded others might not - I just thought I would mention that USC is not part of the UC system. It is a private university.

This should be in the chances thread.

Thank you very much, all of you have been very helpful:

I will take a 3rd year of spanish at community college

And thinking of joining a soccer team. (i love the sport, but I’m not that great at it)

I really hate the SAT: i studied hard and scored 600s on the practice exams from princeton review and ended up with low scores. :frowning:
I’m going to take the ACT instead (hoping for at least a 30)

Yes I know USC is a private university, its one of options though.

D did better on the ACT than the SAT. It was good enough to get her into Cal and UCLA. If you can get a 30 or above, you will be in the ballpark. Your grades and EC’s look good. It is important to stress your on-going EC’s that you are passionate about on your app, IMO, not just a bunch of minor EC’s to fluff up the application. Trying something new is great if you are doing it for yourself, not a college appl:) Admission officers can see through that. Stick with what you enjoy and show a long term committment to. Best of luck!
