Hi all -
I'm currently a sophomore looking for a management consulting internship for the summer. I'd really appreciate any pointers from forum members on how to go about landing one.

Some information about me:

-sophomore at one of the top universities in the country (Think: Harvard/Yale)
-majoring in philosophy, but with coursework in math, statistics, econometrics
-GPA: 3.7
-interned at a bank summer of freshman year
-no consulting experience
-expertise in journalism/publishing [internships, campus officer positions for both business and editorial side]

I'm obviously not hoping for the top three (McKinsey, BCG, Bain), but I was wondering if it'll be possible to land an internship with any smaller ones. Does anyone have any experience or advice?

I would use your school’s career center to identify alum in the field and start calling/emailing them. I would not emphasize journalism–a field in the toilet that no one is trying to revive unless your expertise includes online.

I haven’t heard of too many people landing a legitimate consulting internship after sophomore year, but I’m sure it’s possible. Most consulting firms are looking for people rising seniors for internships.

As for the journalism thing another poster mentioned, I wouldn’t hide journalism experience or anything. I am joining an MBB next year full time and I was a journalism major with pretty much just journalism internship experience. If you have leadership experience and examples of impact through that, then they’ll be interested. Consulting is not investment banking – they actually like a variety of backgrounds.
