consulting

how does one get into consulting for businesses? what type of background should that person have? what are the job opening prospects for consulting? are most consultants concentrated within consulting firms?

Consulting firms mostly recruit at top colleges, the usual suspects. Engineers are popular now in terms of majors but top grads in all majors have a shot. Not sure if your talking post BA/BS or MBA, but you can work pre MBA as well as post.

someone told me that its hard to land a (good) job as a consultant out of undergrad cuz why would someone want advice from someone who doesnt have any experience in the field?

for pre-MBA, whats the salary like? whats the job prospects like?

do consultants normally stay in their jobs... or do they do something else later (like i-banking... many leave after a few years)?

is the MBA the best booster for a consultant? what about graduate degrees or law degree?

Students coming out of undergrad generally aren't hired as outside consultants like the many independent consultants who already have experience in an industry. What often happens is that recent undergrad students try to land jobs with big management or technical consulting firms. In these firms they usually have a job title of junior analyst, kind of the same title recent undergrads have at ibanking firms.

In general, recent undergrads go through a 2 year program at a consulting firm, at which point, they're encouraged to go back to school for an MBA or to get some specialized experience in a certain industry. The major consulting firms, like the major ibanking firms, are sometimes seen as feeders for top MBA programs. After obtaining an MBA from a good b-school, it's a bit easier to land a job at a solid consulting firm, and the opportunities for advancement in any job greatly increase. Sometimes some pre-MBA consultants really impress the consulting firm they worked for, and the consulting firm will pay for their MBA tuition granted that they agree to come back to the firm upon graduation.

Base salaries for pre-MBA junior analysts at major management consulting firms are around
50,000-60,000 with the potential of bonuses. This base salary is comparable to junior analysts at ibanking firms, but ibankers have the potential to get considerably larger bonuses.

Competition among undergrad students for jobs at major management consulting firms (Mckinsey, Bain, Accenture, Mercer, Booz Allen Hamilton) is really tough. The major management consulting firms do most of their heavy recruiting only at top universities.

Many experienced consultants choose not to stay with a major consulting firm. Instead, they start up their own independent consulting services. This usually translates into more money, but these people need to have good connections, a good reputation as a consultant, and some decent industry experience.
