Contact coach for club and intramural sports?

So I have been talking to quite a few DI and DII rowing coaches, but recently I have taken interest in a school that only has a club and intramural team. Now perhaps this is a stupid question, but can a sport help you get into a school that only has a club or intramural team and how would you flag this on your application? Should I still speak to the coach anyway?

My academics aren't horrible - I have a 3.85 total GPA unweighted and 4.03 weighted. For my SAT I received a 2130 (R:660, M:760, W:710) and for my SAT II I got a 710 in Bio, 720 in Literature and 670 in Math Level II. These are all in line with the school's middle 50% scores. However, I know that academics alone normally won't get you into a school. I need something more. So how would I go about getting that extra push with rowing?

Thanks in advance for all responses!

Wickefied - Absolutely, you should talk to the coach to find out what they are all about. If you are interested in this school, and rowing could be a large part of your college experience then I think you should find out more.

You have very good academics. “Isn’t horrible” would not be the way I would describe them. Based upon what I’ve read and experienced, intramural or club sports isn’t enough to flag your application with admissions. You’re right that some schools require more than athletics, but there are many, many schools out there that would be excited to have a student-athlete like you. Have you considered D3 schools? If you haven’t already, I think it would be worth your while.

Good luck!

Ok, sounds good. I’ll send the coach an email and see what happens. I’m just concerned because the acceptance rate is around 18%, which of course isn’t as difficult as Stanford or an Ivy, but I think still requires something special. I’ll just cross my fingers and try to put out an outstanding application. Thanks for the input!
