If you are below 21 years old and do not have 20/20 vision, are you given glasses or are contacts allowed by any small chance?

Issued glasses for Plebe summer and then back to your contacts at the end of the summer.

I have 20/40 vision, but have never worn glasses--will I be forced to wear them?

you bet, you get a nice pair of bcu's or birth control units for plebe summer, but like the other guy said once the academic year starts you can wear whatever you want.

No, not unless you are 20/40 in both eyes...and only if they feel it will impair your ability to function (ie: shoot, etc)

USNA changed its waiverable eye restrictions last year....if one has 20/40 vision in both eyes they do not need a waiver and they do not need to wear glasses, unless as navy 2010 points out - you want to. Our kiddo Plebe 2010 class, originally was listed as needing a waiver for one 20/30 eye ( the other was 20/15) but once USNA changed the rules, she was good to go. Sounds like it benefits you as well jetpilotf_14.

I hate glasses. My eyes feel weird when I'm NOT wearing contacts.

Well cwjones411....if you get into USNA you WILL wear what is called "BirthControlGlasses" or BCG's all throughout Plebe Summer like it or not. They are big, plastic, brown and ugly and you'll have them on to see like everyone else, male or female. Welcome to military life :-)

PM I've always wondered with they are called BCG's...ha ha :D

No I actually have 20/20 vision but when I visited West Point, the some of the cadets were still resentful over being forced to wear those things for like 2 1/2 months!

Bossf51....Yeah, the joke on BCG comes from the fact that you look so ugly no one would WANT you! I've seen enough shots from last Plebe Summer to agree that no one is flattered in those glasses, no one! :-)

gee I heard a slightly different version...ha ha I won't go there.

Ummmmm...... I'm just gonna throw a wrench into things a bit (surprise, surprise)...

Yes, they will issue you a highly-stylish and nuclear-surviveable pair of glasses. No doubt. However, there is an old saying at USNA, and like it or not, it's true: "You rate what you skate", meaning that you are entitled to what you can get away with.

I honestly don't remember if contacts were prohibited during Plebe Summer in my day, but if they were, then I got away with wearing them. This was in the days before extended-wear contacts, too, so I got very, VERY good at throwing them into my eyes first thing each morning, often by feel alone.

Not encouraging anyone to beat the regs, of course, but the Detailers and the Administration have bigger things to worry about. What you need to weigh is the potential risks of getting caught (those pesky Detailers get spun up over the darndest things, you know...) and the risks of running into trouble with your lenses during an evolution.

Decisions, decisions....
