Contacting a college about a submitted app

How would one go about contacting a college to add too or change the application? On the Common App site it says that once an application is submitted, it cannot be changed and resubmitted, so the applicant must contact the college directly. Would this be done through email, snail mail, fax, phone, etc.?

Are colleges generally forgiving if an applicant contacts them saying, for example, that they submitted the wrong essay and could they send a replacement?

How do they perceive updates? Like if you are competing in a large science fair or something in January, how would you let them know of the outcome?

Also, for deferred students from EA/ED, would a college be forgiving if the applicant asked to submit essays to completely replace (not complement) the original ones submitted?

bumpity bump

I emailed Princeton about a wrong essay I sent and they promptly sent me an email saying it’s okay and to mail the correct one with a note attached.
I also think updates would be fair game, especially if it’s something big.

Awesome! Thank you! Coincidentally, my college in question is also Princeton. :P

Anyone else?
