I've read various articles on line about how to essentially "cold call" (email) a potential PhD advisor before applying. However, there are a number of professors of interest to me who know the PI of the lab I have been a part of as an undergrad for the past 3 years. What is the generally accepted protocol on making contact in that case? Should I talk to my PI and ask her to put me in touch and make initial contact, or should I still email the professor myself and let them know that I have worked with this person they know?

Will you be asking your PI for letters of recommendation? If so, that would be a good time for you to discuss your plans and aspirations for grad school. Then would be a good time to talk about who you hope to work for and to see if perhaps the PI might introduce you, or at least give you the OK to mention the PI’s name in trying to contact the professor.

Yes, my PI will be writing letters of recommendation. She’s actually already done the first round of them for a number of fellowships. I’ve talked with her quite a bit about my grad school plans, but you’re right - the best thing to do is probably just ask her about this. :p
