Hey guys, so I’m an international high-school senior and I’m currently waiting to hear back from a number of universities that I applied to. I plan to start contacting coaches (I know its late) to hopefully make it as a preferred walk-on to the varsity team.
My initial plan was to wait till my decisions are out and contact the coaches from the college that I was accepted to but now I’m contemplating if I should contact all of them as soon as I can. (I understand the NCCA has its own set of rules when it comes to player-coach interactions) .
I was wondering if contacting the coaches while decisions aren’t out yet would increase/decrease my chances of getting accepted to that specific college. Will the recruiting coaches inform admissions officers? Would the admissions officer see that I’ve taken an initiative to be part of the school? Or would this not affect my application decision at all and I should go with my initial plan? I’m not entirely experienced in this process since I’m probably part of 0.0001% of the seniors in my country who would want to/are playing college sports in America.
Thanks in advance. Any insight would be helpful
By the way, in a perfect world where I contact a coach and he’s interested, but I get rejected to that college, will I still have a shot at getting in? Does the head coach weigh in on the decisions if he/she is interested in an athlete?
The first step is to be registered and cleared as D1 eligible with NCAA.

@AroundHere Thanks for getting back to me, yeah I’ve done that!
I think it is too late for a coach to be of any help unless you are a really, really top athlete who just decided to go to college rather than go pro. Most decisions for admissions have been made and are being mailed out this week Most coaches have long ago handed in their lists to the admissions officer for their recruits.
At this point, focus on getting in and, if you are deciding between a few school, then contact those coaches if you think that will help you make your decision. Do they have walk on try outs? When are those held? Do your stats line up with the team’s? Can the team use you?
When the admission decisions are being announced in less than 2 weeks, and most likely all all decisions have already been made, I do not think your calling the coach is going to help at all. You should have contacted the coaches in the spring of your junior year, or at least in the fall of your senior year. At this point, what is done is done. Any contact with the coaches will unlikely be of any help regarding admissions. Most of the college coaches are now focusing on next year’s recruit.
