Alright so I've always heard that if you contact the admissions councilor that it shows lots of interest in the school, but the question is, ask them what? They seem very busy, and don't want to be asked trivial questions like when was the school built.

Also could anything else help to your admission? Such as signing up for email lists, sending SAT scores to them direct after taking it, going on tours etc?

Admissions recruiters are looking to make relationships with interested students — if they are from a school that values this sort of thing. Many selective schools don’t value this at all – so it’s senseless to try to cozy up to them. The blanket “advice” you’ve received fails the logic test which you yourself have deduced. Theses schools don’t want legions of fawners at their door or email server.

However, if there is some out of the way, or less-known school that piques your interest that you meet at a college info fair, get a business card and investigate and apply potentially.
