Contemporary Music Programs - please help a beginner parent to figure this out!

I don’t know how strong OP’s son’s interest in non-music academics is, but when my son was evaluating schools, one thing he considered was ease of access to academics. Even though the teacher for his instrument at ASU was world-class, and even though they had Barrett’s honors college, and even though there was a good chance of a whopping merit scholarship, he was worried about the plan to move the music school to a campus across town, which would have made it harder to get to academic classes. So if he’s interested in both music and academics, he needs to consider geography, too, and potential commuting time between two campuses.

Agreed, I was worried about that, too. I think if my d goes there that I’ll be helping her figure out how to get some academic classes on other campuses in summer term. I looked at there are lot of math and physics classes offered in summer. And for math, through calculus you can study math downtown, and since nursing is downtown you can get intro chem and physics and so on as well it seems.

Thank you all so much for this info. I didn’t realize they were moving the music program to downtown. Will your daughter want I live on the Tempe campus and commute? Or would she live downtown?

Yes, definitely still strongly considering that. My son has zero interest right now, but am hoping once the excitement of checking out new schools wears off he will reconsider.

Those are definitely good points. Did your son end up there or somewhere else?

Does anyone have any experience with the Loyola New Orleans contemporary music program? We are planning to visit there as well in April.
I know it is completely different than ASU…size etc.

Somewhere else.

cathjack, they are only moving this new popular music program downtown, not all music. My understanding is that there is a new dorm + rehearsal spaces + classrooms + popular music center being built downtown. Apparently all first years in the popular music program will be assigned to that new dorm / multi-use building. And then all classes the students need in that program will be offered downtown. I asked on twitter during a massive all school Youtube ASU livestream and got that answer anyway (although it wasn’t clear whether that responder know all the details, and also since the dorm doesn’t exist this semester, it isn’t in the drop down price calculator on the ASU website yet)

It was on my son’s list. In the end we weren’t sure how solid the academics and financial stability are there and we never got the chance to visit so he wound up not applying. Sounds like it has an excellent music program, however.

Ok, thanks, this is all very helpful. I guess we’ll check out the downtown campus as well as Tempe when we go in April. Thanks so much for the heads up!

Just FYI, Clive Davis is really more music industry. NYU Steinhardt offers a music technology degree that includes music production training. Music Technology | NYU Steinhardt. Similarly, Syracuse Bandier is music industry, but Syracuse Setnor offers a music technology program. The catch is, you have to audition into the conservatory to be considered for the program. Sound Recording Technology (B.M.) - College of Visual and Performing Arts – Syracuse University

Thank you so much for the information. My son attended the summer program at Clive Davis last summer and will be applying to that program as his number one choice. He is more into producing / technology style. This coming summer he is attending a Mixing and Mastering summer course in Berlin. So far, the most appropriate programs for him are Clive Davis, Syracuse Bandier Program in Recording and Entertainment, Northeastern (Music Industry) and Drexel. Performance is not really his thing so he is avoiding the programs that he needs to audition for. I read somewhere that Drexel has a high acceptance rate compared to the other schools.

Yes, that’s true about Drexel. Did your son attend Clive Davis remotely? My son was signed up for the NYU Steinhardt summer program but decided not to pursue it once it went remote. Good luck to your son! Berlin sounds fantastic!

Yes Clive Davis was remote but he really enjoyed it. This summer at Catalyst Berlin is supposed to be in person - so fingers crossed.

@compmom ~ Can you send me your list please? My HS Junior is starting his Music Tech college search. We’ve started looking at many of the programs listed in this thread, but I’d hate to miss any that are a good fit for him. Thanks!!
