Continue Spanish or Take Russian?

Hi. I'll be attending college soon, and I was wondering about what language I should take in college. I've been taking Spanish for four years now, so I am getting better at that language; however, I don't want to lose my skills in it. I was thinking about either taking additional courses of it in college or do a summer study abroad. The problem is, I also want to learn Russian, so I won't be able to have any room for Spanish if I take Russian starting as a freshman. What should I do? I want to be fluent in both languages, but I don't know how fluent I would be if I worked hard enough and did two years of it while a study abroad for a semester. If I did this, is it possible to join a Spanish Club instead and use that to keep my Spanish skills?

You will most likely forget about Spanish, unless you practice a few times a week. Don’t bother going into Russian if you are four years into Spanish.

So keep Spanish then? Will I be able to remember it if I take another year of it or two and a study abroad?

I would definitely go for Russian. Russian is a critical language so there are more scholarships for study abroad and stuff. Plus it’s really cool to learn a language with a whole different alphabet.

I took four years of Spanish in high school (but was never that good at it), then took five semesters of Russian in college. I looooved Russian, and that was definitely the right choice for me.

If you don’t take Russian in college, you’ll probably never learn it because it’s not easy to learn outside of a classroom. Meanwhile, there are lots of opportunities outside of the classroom to practice Spanish and build on what you already know. The BBC has a free online Spanish language program that you might use to keep up your skills: [BBC - Languages - Spanish: All you need to start learning Spanish](http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/)

¡Buena suerte! / Удача!

If your school has students who are native or heritage Spanish speakers, then you can try to maintain and reinforce your Spanish skills by speaking to them in Spanish.
