So lately many of my friends have been receiving interesting letters from colleges & universities from schools like Northwestern, UVA, etc. saying " we are impressed with your record" and to " keep pursuing excellence" in your life.

Do that mean that they are in? Why exactly do colleges send out these letters... and not a formal acceptance letter?

Just a thought. Never heard of this before!

Probably just advertising their colleges.... colleges are really smart... they advertise their colleges through any means of communication.... i got one from lehigh... i applied there... they said we hope you are doing really well and still keeping up with your grade... does that mean im in?.... i have no clue... probably no... they probably send this to everyone who applies

If you're seniors who have applied to these schools - don't they sound like likely letters to you? There are a couple of current threads on this topic - one on the parent board, one on the Duke board. You might also want to do a search on the topic.

UVA's likely letters are out - they usually mean that the student will be offered a place in the Echols or Rodman programs when official acceptances go out. Congrats if you've gotten one!

They are marketing letters, pure and simple.

And they're working, exactly as the colleges want. They have your friends thinking about the school, starting to imagine what it would be like to go there, etc. The colleges have primed the pump, so to speak, so that if they do give acceptances your friends are more likely to enroll there instead of someplace else.

A tip-off, BTW, should be that many of your friends are receiving these. If just one person gets a letter like this, it may mean something. But when everyone gets one its a clue something's up.
