My last score was Math 690 CR 230 WR 350. What I should do? I have D.H both(I learned first, but not very good) .May be I should buy BARRON'S Workbook for CR?
For WR was 350, but one time I got 450. I read half os silverturtle's guide.I cannot use rules, I don't see confounded mistakes, esecially when the answer is no error.
So, what do you suggest?

Practice is your only chance of improvement

Isn’t a 230 CR omitted everything? ■■■■■…

What practice? which books?

^^ Don’t be too harsh; when Suleyman first came to CC, he spoke in a completely broken English. Granted, he still speaks partially broken English, but I see some improvement here. If he has the will, he has big room for improvement while you don’t have a room as large as his. Stop the hating, and stop the dissing.

Since we established on another thread you started that you are an international student and English is not your native language. Colleges will not expect you to have CR and W scores that are competitive with native English speakers. They will focus on your TOEFL score to assure themselves that if they admit you, you will have the English language skills to function in an American college and succeed in courses taught in English.

The only score that is going to be important to them is your math score since it is not as dependent on English language skills. Your score of 690 in math is a good one and probably still underestimates your true ability in math since many of the problems are word problems and require a certain level of comprehension of written English and your 230 in CR suggests that you probably do not have the English skills to fully understand many of the word problems on the math section of the test.

You should concentrate on strengthening your English language skills to the point where you can get a good score on the TOEFL and apply as a major in the physical sciences or engineering where strong math skills are critical and English language ability is not as critical. I think the TOEFL score, SAT math score and your intended major are what will determine if you will be admitted to an American college or not.

Even if he’s international, colleges would still expect 500+ on the CR section. I know this for a fact, because I am international myself.

@Suleyman: try Barron’s, Kaplan, Princeton Review. Basically, at your level ANY book would do.

Don’t just read half of silverturtle’s guide; read all of it.

benhpark,
My english is broken, because one year ago I didn’t know any english word.Anyway, I share your opinion that I enhanced during my CC forum posts.
Lemaitre1,
I would follow your opinion if I had money.I can pass SAT Subject Test too.But now I must get a high score and after 2 years I will give my application to bad Montana universities. I will have good scores but I will go to bad universities in order to get financial aid.In addition I have 2 recommendations from World Health Organization(uncle) and UNICEF(aunt). And I plan to work in montana and supply myself.
CherryPancakes,
I agree with you. I plan to buy BARRON’S 2400 + both workbooks for CR/WR
hahalolk,
I cannot detect mistakes. I plan practice with BARRON’S workbook and that’s all.

P.S Thanks to everyone.

Tbh your best bet is to truly attack each section one on one so to speak. Seriously sit down and practice and you will improve no doubt. Your math is great; CR and Writing need some help. I suggest the sparknotes SAT Prep section. It really guides you well and then practice some sections - do not time yourself. Simply do like about 2 or 3 practice exams each section slowly taking your time. Once you get the hang try to time yourself and your score will jurastically increase. Best of luck.

Suleyman, you have been asking the same question over and over. The answer for you is NOT to buy more books. You won’t find any magical shortcuts in any of the books you listed.

To increase your score, you have to start working the Blue Book with both patience and dedication. If you want to preserve your tests, find one of the older white or red SAT books.

Go through the practice tests WITH A DICTIONARY. Your score is totally unimportant. Take as much time as needed. Keep a record of the answers you answered correctly and of the ones you had to guess. On the tests where you want to see an improvement, DO NOT GUESS. It is obvious that it is the guessing that is killing your score, as you should be able to amass sufficient easy and easy/medium questions to score much higher than a 230.

If you can’t get the red book in Russia, sign up for the online TCB course. And, please, please, stop WASTING your money and time on all the other books. And stop paying attention to really poor advice!

Lastly, you might consider trying your luck on the ACT.

Don’t answer anything on the CR. Take them free and you’ll get a 260-270 depending on the curve.
Your other option is to practice and improve as others have said, which is preferable. You should be able to break 400 at least.
Oh and keep this in mind: DO NOT GUESS. Trust me, when you’re as low on the scale as you are, guessing is what hurts you. Even educated guesses hurt you. Unless you’re over 70% sure of an answer, don’t answer it.
You’re good at math, so let me explain it mathematically: Most of your answers in CR are wrong. The ratio of wrong to right answers is at least 4:1 in your case, with a 230. It’s probably a lot higher. Now, if you answer using educated guesses, it’s likely your educated guess is going to be wrong. Which means that you’re going to get answers wrong at a rate of higher than 1 per 5 questions. Since each wrong answer makes you go down .25, mathematically, you’re lowering your score by guessing.

EDIT: Sorry xiggi, I honestly didn’t mean to answer practically the same as you did (I posted before I’d seen yours since I started typing before you posted.)

No need to be sorry! I should be happy that someone agrees with me. :)

You are. I’m glad :D

You’re better off only the easy questions. If you omitted everything in the CR section, you would get a score of 230. Just answer the level one sentence completions and you’ll raise your score to about a 300.

You guys mean that if I will translate all new words in BB I would get high score? Well, I don’t know what Red Book means, and I’m not Russian and I have never been there.I’m living and learning in Azerbaijan.(on the shore of Caspian Sea).My father is unsatifacted with my 690 score and he consider that I must get 800.I don’t know only functions(not x-y plane) and everything else is correct. He is angry because I’m solving hard logical reasoning questions and failing with functions. Anyway, my CR is bad. I bought D.H and learned vol.1 but it’s no use, as I can see. I must get at leat 400 in order to get 1500 on my October SAT. I plan 720/400/400. And then I plan to pass SAT 2 Math(both).

Sorry for the Azerbaijan versus Russia confusion. I saw a post about you reading a forum in Russian. As you know, Americans are geographically challenged!

No need to translate the words. What I meant was to use an English dictionary.

Tell your father that scoring an 800 on the math test is NOT that easy, especially since there are word problems. The Math Level 2 will probably be more straightforward for a strong math student.

For the CR, there are few options except practicing without time limits until you get better. It is important for you to read as many tests as possible and use that time to develop a relevant dictionary.

The Red Book was the predecessor to the Blue Book and contained earlier versions of the test. If you have access to an Ebay or Amazon, you should be able to grab one for a few dollars. Another option, would be to check with an international school in your country. They might have an old copy for you to borrow.

I’m azerbaijan but we all in my familly speak russian anytime.Of course I have I bought 3 books from amazon. I can buy old version of SAT C.B guide. But I have BARRON’S SAT old 2005 edition, can I use it?
Thanks.
Suleyman.H.

If you have the book, you should use it for your CR. The idea is to increase your vocabulary by practicing and reading in context. Although people in your situation are among the few who benefot from reading lists of words, I still think you’d be better off by ACTIVELY reading as many real tests as you can before taking the official test.

Starting from a base of not knowing any words, it won’t be easy to score very high on the test, but it is not impossible.

What mean I don’t know any words? I know 170/200 D.H.
