Controversy over new UofSC president

Should prospective students be concerned about the controversy surrounding the new university president? UofSC is my S20’s #1 college choice, but the news articles we are reading from afar are a bit unsettling. Current parents and students, what can you tell us about this?

“USC’s accrediting body, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, has sent the school a former letter asking for answers on McMaster’s involvement and warning that “undue influence” could affect USC’s accreditation, which allows the school to receive federal funds and lends legitimacy to the school’s degrees. The American Association of University Professors could sanction the school for approving Caslen against a unanimous vote of “no confidence” from USC’s Faculty Senate.”

Sounds similar to when William McRaven ( Seal Team Commander) was names as UT Chancellor. Many shuddered at the thought of a military type in a top position at the University of Texas.

Interesting. I’m sorry to see political maneuvering in education.

I have also been following as my daughter visited UofSC and LOVED it ('21 grad). Whether the Governor had any involvement, I have no idea, but UofSC crafted a response to the request for information that should satisfy the SACS as far as accreditation is concerned.

Thank you so much @3kids2dogs.
That’s exactly the kind of follow-up I was looking for. Hopefully this will all blow over, one way or another, by the time our kids have to make a college decision.

Ugh.

Thanks @3kids2dogs Hopefully the process will move quickly and it will all be resolved, one way or another, before May 1.

My son is a sophomore. I am not worried about this at all, and I think it will all blow over. He’s been a great and involved President thus far.

My daughter is a junior. They all loved the last president, but the new president doesn’t seem to be disliked by the students at all. They are all giving him a chance.

To close the loop, it looks like the university will not lose accreditation or face any other punishment because of this scandal.
