Conversation with Admissions After ED Deferral

I was deferred from the school where I applied ED. I sent a letter of interest, and set up a phone call. Since I was released from the ED agreement, I applied to a few other schools and would now like to wait to hear back from all of them before making a final decision. Do you think the Admissions Counselor will ask me if I still plan to attend if accepted? I am worried about how it will look if I say that I am now open to other options. Will it hurt my chances?

You can say something like, “Well of course didn’t-like-me-enough-U remains at the top of my list.” I mean, today, while you are on the phone with them, asking about what you need to do to improve your application so as to get accepted, it must be your first choice otherwise you wouldn’t be bothering to set up that phone call. Whether it still is after you hang up the phone, or after you have all of your acceptances and aid packages, would be an entirely different thing, and that is something you’ve no need to go into with them at all.

Good point! Thank you!

Also this is how typically it would play out…if ED college doesn’t accept you, of course you would apply to others.

relax, you already showed a lot of interest in the school by applying ED. If they didn’t take you ED then they fully expect you to consider your set of acceptances and choose the one that is best for you.

And it may all be a moot point anyway. With a few exceptions like Stanford just about everyone that applies ED is “deferred” even if the college already knows they will reject the kid in the spring. There’s no telling where you really stand with this school until then.
