I am an NC student who has not had a chance to vist the campus, but from what i have read and seen in rankings I am very drawn to Holy Cross. I plan on going pre med/pa and have heard great things about their programs in the fields previously stated, How hard is it to maintain a good science GPA? Also my biggest concern is Worcester, i have heard some pretty bad things about it and if someone could shed some light on the city interactions a Holy Cross student has regarding safety, things to do, etc, that would be great! Thanks!

bump bump bump

please help me out

I’d suggest re-posting on Holy Cross site in CC’s alphabetical listing of colleges

uh holy cross is in Massachusetts… oh wait thats an awful reason, nvm

Why? Do you want to go there or not? Why do we need to convince you?

US News & World Reports ranks it 29th nationally for liberal arts colleges. Not too shabby.

Holy Cross has very good academics and nice campus. HC has a January 15th application due date.

Its a wonderful liberal arts school in the Jesuit tradition that has excellent placement to med schools.

But if you are going that route, you should also apply to Fordham (Rose Hill) and BC.

Agree that Holy Cross has one of the best medical school acceptance rates. HC also has an alum who won the Nobel Prize in medicine, one who is a top doctor at the NIH, a few who are med school presidents. Holy Cross is also need-blind for admissions.

HC has very good alumni network which helps in job placement and internships.

On the east coast HC ranks along Duke, Hopkins, and Tufts for best pre-med programs. HC is also SAT optional and is ranked 12th by CNBC Payscale study for highest alumni salaries. Kiplingers ranked Holy Cross in the top 20 LAC’s for best value.

The campus is on a steep hill overlooking Worcester. It is somewhat separated for the city by the highway and the neighborhood it is in seems to be OK. It is a beautiful campus but you have to like the hill. Everyone there was super nice and the learning atmosphere is collaborative from what we heard on our visits. Many students double major.

[Jesuit Colleges and Universities Among Americas Best in U.S. News & World Report Rankings](http://www.ajcunet.edu/US-News-2012-Rankings)

Holy Cross is one of a very few top liberal arts schools that has a Division 1 sports program. As mentioned HC has great pre-med, strong business alumni network, is SAT optional with January 15th application due date, and a nice campus not far from Boston.

Holy Cross is also the only Jesuit college which is undergraduate only. That either appeals to you or it doesnt. Its a great school. Its also on the liberal side of Jesuit colleges.

Fordham has 15k students, but about 7700 undergraduates, divided by two campuses…which gives you choice of venue/experience. Lincoln Center is a mini NYU in mid-town/upper west side, tony and artsy, but very urban. 1800 undergrads, adjacent to the Law School. Rose Hill is the main campus in the Bronx, 5,500 undergraduates, in a gated and gothic campus, adjacent to the world class Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens (joint programs). They also have joint programs with the Albert Einstein School of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Fordham’s placement for med schools is exceptional as well. Its on the Metro North trainline, literally at the gates on Fordham Road, and is a 15 minute ride to Grand Central Station in Manhattan on 42nd Street/Lexington Avenue. Students can take courses at either campus and use the RamVan to get back and forth for free.

They are in the Patriot League for football with Holy Cross, Colgate, Georgetown, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell. They also play Columbia in the 9-11 Freedom Cup annually in a fierce rivalry. For basketball, Fordham is in the very competitive A10 Conference, playing UMass, Temple, Xavier, George Washington, Richmond, Dayton, Duquesne, LaSalle among others. They recently defeated nationally ranked Harvard, as well as Georgia Tech in non-conference games.

In the final analysis, its a flip of the coin on selecting Holy Cross or Fordham, depending on your preferred location, type of experience, internship opportunities, size etc. Both are outstanding schools. Some prefer being in New York and some prefer being in Worcester, near Boston.

To address your question about the city of Worcester, as a NC resident(I am too) you may find the weather daunting. They receive a fairly significant amount of snow yearly…indeed quite a bit more than Boston. The city itself is a bit of a rundown mill town - but I never felt “unsafe” visiting(I used to live in Mass) The college itself is very nice, with a bright vibrant student body…If you can handle the weather I would definitely encourage you to apply.

Holy Cross enoys one of the highest alumni giving rates usually 50-55% in any given year. As mentioned HC competes in the Patriot League and against most Ivies. Holy Cross has played Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown for well over 100 years in football and the HC-Harvard game is a good rivalry.

HC is one of those schools that really considers demonstrated interest (visit, interview), so I don’t recommend appearing ambivalent in your application, if you apply.

holy cross students love the school and thus hc has very high retention rate. For students looking for a top liberal arts education with great school spirit and one of the best alumni networks might look at holy cross-january 15th application due date. great school.
