Convince me to apply to Holy Cross!

I am an NC student who has not had a chance to vist the campus, but from what i have read and seen in rankings I am very drawn to Holy Cross. I plan on going pre med/pa and have heard great things about their programs in the fields previously stated, How hard is it to maintain a good science GPA? Also my biggest concern is Worcester, i have heard some pretty bad things about it and if someone could shed some light on the city interactions a Holy Cross student has regarding safety, things to do, etc, that would be great! Thanks!

bump bump bump

bump please give me some advice!!!

Worcester is actually pretty nice. If you are seeking a school that would prepare you to be competitive for med school down the road or for PA school, then you could not do much better than to attend Holy Cross. Seek out as much information as you can about the Health Professions Advisory Program, which you would have the opportunity to obtain a seat after your first semester–they’ve demonstrated the ability to place graduates into Allop, Osteo, PA, CNL, Dental, Vet programs for 87% over the past many years. Their Science Center is without equal anywhere. Show your authentic interest in the school, and prepare to interview and write persuasively. If you are a Jr right now, then consider learning as much as possible this spring, summer, then applying ED.
They pick from a long list of great candidates. CHC is trending for many more students these past couple of years. There are better contributors than I. But this is what I have learned as a H.S. Jr.

As a bio/premed freshmen now, I didn’t do too hot in biology this semester whereas in HS I did pretty good. I know at least 9 kids in my class alone dropped out and there were 36 of us. As a biology major myself, I’m kind of struggling so hopefully it’ll be better next semester for me. Partly, it’s my fault because I honestly don’t think I tried my best. To answer your science GPA question, it all depends on the individual. I feel though from a general concensus that biology can be a pain and for freshmen chemistry (Atoms & Molecules I) you can either do okay or horrible depending on the teacher. My teacher had fairly straightforward tests, however I know a few of my friends who took chemistry and had a different teacher who threw difficult questions at the students so he’s challenging and you may be discouraged from your test scores, but he scales them a lot.

But please, don’t let the information I just told you scare you off! Haha. The premed program is great here! Like LaLigaBarca stated, 87% of the premed students got into medical school which is a pretty high percentage. I think medical schools acknowledge HC’s repuation for hard academics so even if you end up with a low GPA, I think they’ll understand.

The science center is beautiful and is fairly new. If you haven’t gotten a chance to visit, you really should! I mean, I never got to actually take a tour at HC until Accepted Students Day and I fell in love. Overall, it’s a beautiful campus! Even if you can’t visit, I took some nice shots during the fall and if you want I’ll PM them to you!

Worcester may look scary and congested, but the safety here is pretty good as far as I know. Worcester was one of my concerns too when I applied. I’m not much of a city girl, more of a suburban type, but I never had trouble with it.

If you wanted to get off campus and find someplace to go on the weekends besides what Worcester has to offer, HC also provides shuttles to Providence and Boston. In Worcester, the shuttles take you to Shrewsberry street which has tons of restaurants, and it can bring you to the Blackstone Valley shops (a big shopping plaza) and Walmart. Also every Saturday night they hold a dance at the Edge. There’s plenty of things to do and campus activities happening.

yah if you could pm them to me, that would be great! thanks!

any one else?

HC has one of the best premed programs going and a brand new 60 million dollar science complex. If you want premed, they are second to none. Definitely worth an application. Be sure to interview and take an offical tour to show interest.

I am currently a senior at HC with a bunch of friends in science majors. My roommate is Pre-Med and she has to log long hours in labs and just studying in general. However, from what I can tell the work is worthwhile. Yes, we have a great success rate for getting students into med school, but keep in mind that that rate does not account for the significant number of students who drop Pre-Med (I have a few friends who dropped it). Then again, there are quite a few students who excel in the science fields GPA-wise. As a previous poster alluded, it really depends on the individual. In my experience (although I have not taken a science course since I used my AP scores), HC professors are really great and genuinely interested in helping students succeed. If you reach out to them, the returns can be tremendous. Also to reiterate–the science center is great. It has the best food on campus and nice study spaces so at least if you are spending a lot of time there it has a nice atmosphere. HC really likes to see demonstrated interest in the admissions process, so if you are serious about the school and have the opportunity to visit (even after submitting your application), it may help.
