Can someone convince me to go to Carnegie Mellon? I am torn between Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, and Tufts for engineering major. CMU gave me the $16,000 Judith Resnick scholarship.... I am not sure about Tufts and Cornell... but I dont suspect they'll give me much money. But I somehow feel that I'd be better suited at a place like Tufts or Cornell. Someone please convince me, myself, and my parents.

Then they're your schools.

which engineering major?

sounds like you've already started convincing yourself.....

If you're a computer science or electrical and computer engineering person, I would definitely go with CMU, especially with the scholarship. Cornell is probably a little better for the other engineering majors. I think Cornell and CMU are both much better than Tufts for engineering. Cornell is very freaking cold.

Pittsburgh has much better air connections and therefore reasonable air costs.

Easy to get to Washington DC, NYC, or Chicago.

Bigger city.

Has a Dinosaur.

More focused college. And recruiters know it.

A mechanical engineering professor is a Hawaiian-Japanese (ph.d MIT, woman)

Girls at CMU are scarce. Especially in the technical fields.

You will have no trouble in being discovered by the opposite sex.

If you are lithe, you will be heavily recruited for as a driver of a racer, but you must have great nerves.

You can watch major league baseball or football.

Has a open air ice skating rink in the city park adjacent to school.

Same park also has a large greenhouse for tropical stuff if you get homesick.

If you want more variety, University of Pittsburgh (20,000+ students) is a block or two away.

Has the Carnegie name.

gahhhhhhhh. i got rejected from columbia, cornell and upenn so i guess carnegie it is.

istoomuch....Airfairs are horrible here. for me to go home (to NJ) 250...but if you use flyi(the cheapest airline) its really cheap to go to DC but expensive anywhere else. just wanted to clear that one thing up. everything else is right...good post

augi7,

I don't know where in NJ you live, but starting May 4 Southwest Air is flying Philly-Pgh. They advertise $29 one way, may be just intro fees but at least now there's competition for USAirways. I'm kind of ****ed about it for myself personally since we are in NJ not too far from Phila and this would be perfect but S graduates from CMU next month. Figures. Good for you tho' if you can get to Philly.

Your airfare from your location may be expensive NJ-PIT, but the relationship is from HI to Pitt or HI to Ithaca. Ithaca has but one airline-US Airways whereas Pitt has all the majors.

The cost of airlines is not the distance that you travel but how you fill the seats available. For instance, the cost to fly coast to coast is cheaper than flying just a few hundred miles. Flying from Oregon to Pitt, (3 years ago) used to cost $350 with taxes and advance purchase, now it costs $250. If you consider value, going to a school that is further away from home is actually cheaper in terms of transportation cost than going to a school that is within driving distance or air comute distance.

If you live in Haiwaii, everywhere is a distance and costly. Air connections and flexibility may be of greater concerns. This is the advantage that CMU has over Cornell and Tufts.

thanks itstoomuch for all the help. i'm actually looking into CMU a lot more now. i found out i got waitlisted by cornell so therefore, not a choice anymore. and i dont think tufts gives any merit based.... carnegie mellon is offering me a lot of opportunities.... Judith Resnick scholarship for half tuition... the choice between Carnegie Institute of Technology, College of Humanities and SOcial Sciences and the Tepper School of Business.... PLUS the Science and Humanities Scholar program which sounds interesting. tufts dont got nothing attractive like that, hehe. thanks for all your help, its making the decision a lot easier.

Yeah, I ws thinking about goign to Carnegie Mellon and I don't know if i should keep my name on the waitlist at Tufts.. I'm from NY, so Tufts is probably closer but not by much. Is Tufts worth waiting for it?
