Cooking class- college

Looking specifically for vegetarian meals.

Okay, here is the deal. I wan to be prepared to know how to cook for college. I'm thinking 30 min or less meals that would be good to get me by so i dont have to resort to living off of spagettios and microwavable crap aha.

Any ideas of a class i could take? Or is the best method learning at home for a cook book? I'd much rather have someone teach me cause i suck at cooking. :[

Cooking is not hard at all. You look in a cook book and you do what it says. Just don’t mismeasure and pay attention to cooking times. Taste as you go along to make sure you haven’t messed up. A cooking class would be a waste of money. I’m betting one or both of your parents knows how to cook. They’ll be willing to help, and obviously, for free.

Two cookbooks right now are my favorite. America’s Test Kitchen puts out a five-ring bound book which is absolutely fantastic. Everything I’ve made from them has been top notch, and their recipes always leave plenty of room for improvising if you want to explore slightly different tastes.

I got “How to Cook without a Book” a month or two ago, and love the recipes in there, too. After you use them once or twice you’ll know the recipe by heart and won’t even have to crack a cookbook open to have plenty of meal ideas for dinner. It’s also very thorough on how to actually do the cooking of various veggies/meats, something most cookbooks lack.

okay. So my parents are divorced, and my mom is too busy too cook. She’s a doctor who owns her own business. We don’t even eat cooked food at home. It’s all microwavable. I hate it. So i don’t have anyone to teach me.

Second, It’s not the mixing part i suck at. I can make soups… cut,. measure, boil… I just have no idea to use an oven. :[ I tried making cookies last year and i burned the first four batches… I suck lol. (mind i followed the directions exactly, and watched them! I just fail. I don’t know how to use the settings apparently.)

Lastly, does anyone know of a “quick vegeterian meals” cook book? Like i said i want to make stuff that will get me by in college, doesn’t take too long to make (less than 30 min). I want some simple recipies, not some crazy complicated ones that involve a million ingredients (that would be too expensive too). Thanks!!!

Most 30 minute meals won’t require using an oven. Also, if you burnt your cookies I imagine either the internal thermometer of your oven is miscalibrated (in which case you can buy a new one to sit on a rack for $5) or you put the cookies on the wrong rack of the oven.

I think the “How to Cook Without a Book” has a decent number of vegetarian recipes, and for those that aren’t, you can always substitute tofu or some sort of hearty beans or whatnot. Anyway, instead of just finding a book of recipes I recommend you learn the ideas behind why you’re doing what you’re doing in those recipes, so you can come up with your own when you’re looking at a half-stocked pantry and there’s no time to run to the store.

Thanks. I appreciate the input. I think ill do just that :]

blah. after your done learning by the book try making your own stuff. i like tossing vegies in a pan and then mixing cooked stuff w/ salad greens. or stir fries. indian food is really very vegetarian friendly. and you can always take out the meat in some meat recipies, or add eggs or tofu in place of meet. good for you to start learning to cook. its actually fun. i’m just too lazy cause of senioritis. ;)
