hi all,
i’m applying to USC this fall and i play cello (not majoring in music though), so i searched cc to see if there was an orchestra/music opps for non-majors. thankfully there’s the orchestra, and i checked out thornton’s site too for any additional info.
the site says private lessons are available, but does anyone know who teaches the private lessons? this kind of sounds stupid because thornton has their cello faculty, but I’m under the impression they only teach music majors.
thanks.
also, does anyone have info for non-music majors at indiana university, bloomington? also looking at their school, can’t find much.
Can I suggest something, e-mail their admissions departments, they are more than willing to answer questions like that,it is their job, and they can tell you definitively what they do and don’t do with non majors playing music. I am sure people on here have knowledge, but you likely will get a more complete answer from the schools.
@musicprnt I actually did and the office sent me a link to prescreen requirements. I actually don’t know if I should ask again because I think they misread my email
Hmm, I think they didn’t pay much attention. You can also give them a call, might be easier to tell them what you are looking for.
My daughter just graduated from IU’s music school so I may be able to help.
IU does have ensembles for non music majors, for example the All Campus Orchestra with the following description:
“An orchestral ensemble designed for the Indiana University student with previous orchestral experience and whose academic major lies outside of the School of Music.”
Also they have private lessons and a host of music classes for non-majors. I remember this from my daughter’s freshman year as she was going over classes. There was an area for non-major which was quite long - from private lessons to dance classes to a variety of music classes in many genres. It’s a big music school so there are many classes.
Finally, there are a lot of “club” and/or outside activities. These seem to be organized year-to-year or organic depending on students. My D was a voice major interested in theatre so many of her friends were in an improv group that they organized on their own and could rent space at the memorial center and give shows. They sometimes would get a stand-up comic or a few instrumentalist to do “interludes”. Plus many of the restaurants and clubs have musicians play. This tends towards contemporary and jazz. There is just a lot of music and performance everywhere.
I hope this helps. The information on ensembles is here: http://www.music.indiana.edu/departments/ensembles/index.shtml
For questions on classes for non-music majors you may just want to call the music school.
Also check this link for more information about strings at IU. I know these websites can be hard to figure out at first.
http://www.music.indiana.edu/departments/academic/strings/courses.shtml
“The String Department offers elective and secondary instrument lessons to Music majors and Non-Music majors interested in studying Violin, Viola, Cello, or Double Bass.”
It also gives an email for asking questions direct to the stings dept.
