Okay, I know there's a CORE fundamental studies class for intro to writing.. I was just wondering if we could be exempt from this requrement by doing well on the SAT writing section. There's no information on that anywhere. In the catalog it says "In March 2005, ETS began the use of a new SAT test for writing. Inofrmation about exemption in connection with the SAT test taken after March 2005 will be available at www.english.umd.edu/programs/FreshmanWriting/Exemptions.html. However, there is no information there about it. Does anyone know? Also is Maryland giving information for a 4 or 5 on AP Italian similar to French and Spanish?

you're exempt from english 101 (intro to writing) if you got over a 670 on the verbal part of the SAT or over a 4 on the english composition ap test.

When I read about the fresh English requirement online, I e-mailed the Freshman Writing Office (the address is freshman-writing@umd.edu) and asked them to review my transcript from the SAT's. I had a Verbal score over 670. This was their response:

"I have reviewed your transcript and found that your verbal SAT score has exempted you from the University's English 101 requirement. You still need to take a Professional Writing, or Junior English, course to meet that requirement, but you have fulfilled the first-year composition course requirement. "

They also noted on my College Park transcript (I checked it online) that I was exempt. When I go to orientation, I'm taking a copy of the e-mail - but I believe when they go into my record to do my registration, the exemption will show up (I hope). As a Biology major, I have to take the Professional Writing for Science Majors at some point.

Yeah... I didn't get above a 670 on the verbal but I got a 720 on writing so I was hoping that would help.

E-mail the Writing Office and see what they think!

When you go to register for classes, they'll have your SAT scores on the computer and will be able to verify that you're exempt from English 101. Remember, the SAT only exempts you from the class, you'll need a 4 or 5 AP Lang & Comp to actually earn the credits.

They never mentioned anything about the writing SAT score during my advising, but it's worth a shot.
