Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship Applicants!

well, i think most of the people that have posted here with good "stats" has also very very good extracurrics too. because i have only met a few people (and incidentally they are the ones that get all the recognition) with those stratospheric test scores that are not very involved in their ECs...

and i'd be willing to bet (i'm talking objectively here, so i'm not like tooting my own horn or anything) that most people that have posted so far have very impressive activities in addition to their stats.

hpn1491 when did you get notified and how?

heyyou... i agree... scores are blurted out most frequently because it's easiest, not necessarily because we worship them

hpn 1491..also tell us what school you applied to please

I emailed the group that does the scholarships and the lady said that the invitations are in waves... the first wave... and a second wave still to come... this second wave includes those in peabody and the college of engineering... she said that the scholarship committee would review more applicants in the coming month... she didn't say if the 2nd wave was exclusively for peabody and engineering... so its possible we could still hear...

amnesia7... thanks so much for the post. would you mind following up on that email to clarify if it is exclusively for peabody and engineering? that would do everyone a great favor!

it seems like many scholarships at many schools are awarded in waves. they have no clue how stressful that makes it for us hopefuls.

well, i got an email yesterday, and i got a letter in the mail today.

i applied to the college of arts and sciences.

i also wanted to apologize for my previous post. the way i worded it made me sound pompous and as if i was implying that the other CCers had good scores but werent well-rounded. I did not mean that at all. Yes, stats are the easiest to post, but i just wanted to remind everyone that they're not everything.

Hi hpn1491, I guess I'll be seeing you in March. It sounds like a lot of fun. Where are you from?

hey isleofthedeep
i'm from detroit. i'm rlly excited as well. vandy is gorgeous...and everyone i've talked to loves it there

where are u from?

isleofthedeep and hpn...could u guys list any special activities/awards you think may have set you apart from others with similar stats...it would help us get an idea of what they're looking for

i'm very science-oriented, so i displayed my passion for medicine and for research in my essays.

i have also been fortunate to do well at state, national, and international science competitions.

i wish the best to all of you who are still waiting on your decisions.

does vandy allocate a certain % of scholarships to each "school"???? like saying that at least 20 from blair school of music, etc??

Southernazn: As I said, I'm kind of lacking in the awards category. I am fortunate to have good recommendations and ECs. In my opinion, ECs and recommendations are really the bread and butter since everyone has the "stats", it seems.

Well, I do Odyssey of the Mind. :) (OM ROCKS!) If you want, you can look up my first post, when I was into the whole "chances" delirium. (No offense to "chances" posters)

Hpn1491: I am from the Washington D.C. area. I'm also into the research and medical fields (at Vanderbilt, I'm interested in neuroscience) - that's what I wrote my essay on. Nothing in the "state, national, and international science competitions" category though. :)

so........did anyone who applied to engineering receive an email yet?

I wanted to clarify the scholarship for everyone. I spoke on the phone with someone in the Vanderbilt scholarship office today, and she said that all the finalists for the Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship HAVE been notified, either by email or by mail. The "second wave" someone earlier mentioned is the other scholarships they have not yet awarded, which are basically less substantial scholarships. These recipients will be notified by late March. I hope this helps everyone.

Thank BP08. Did you happen to ask if all mails were sent on Monday (2/18)?

My DD got that MOSAIC thing today by mail. It was post marked 2/16. If they sent out mail on 18th, we would have to wait until tomorrow to know for sure she did not it.

Gymkid, go back to post #78 on this thread. Engineering students will not be notified of scholarships until early March. They do not have to interview.

Last year my son was notified about one week into March, by regular mail, thin envelope. No interview required. Some things are being done differently this year, but the admissions blog I highlighted above indicates that engineers still will not know until early March.

Good luck.

BTW, this is not a secondary scholarship. I am talking about the full tuition, engineering fees and computer. It used to be called an Honor Scholarship, and then later was given a name. Now, I believe, all of the scholarships are Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarships.

thanks midmo, this is what I thought, but isn't this different than post 94's info? She was told that ALL were notified by now.

Well, at least it's good to hear that there are other merit scholarships out there. I'll guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

yea... guess i'll just have to be patient and hope for the best!

GymKid, I don't know who the other poster talked to. If it was someone in A&S, they probably didn't know it is different in Engineering. Or, the question was not asked clearly. Or, the person on the phone spoke carelessly.

For a definite answer, call Engineering directly. If you get someone who doesn't know anything, ask for Dean Overholser (Senior Associate Dean of Engineering); I'm pretty sure his secretary can answer your question about timing of merit scholarship notifications.

Or, find Heather, Director of Scholarships. Find her entry here for Jan. 25th.
