I keep hearing that I should not apply to AEM as my major and should apply to another major at CALS, and THEN start AEM as major after talking to the department because the innitial admission rate is very low. How could you do this when you have to have declared your major on the application?

AEM admission folks are becoming wary of students who are using this "backdoor" method of getting into the AEM major. Be careful if this how you plan to do it.

I'm just saying what I hear, but I don't quite understand it. Do people really declare a major they have no interest in when applying and then switch?

They usually don't get accepted by doing that.

Some students who have an equal desire to do both AEM and another major are able to clearly communicate that desire in the application essay. They still have to apply to the AEM major even if they're already studying at Cornell and want to switch or double major.

But...the CALS adcom can fish out the phonies and deny them without looking twice

but do they sign up for both AEM and another major in the common app? Or just one? Because CALS majors are SO different from AEM that it sounds hard to fake it.

You have the option to apply for a second choice major, should you not be admitted to your first choice.

right, but they also have to write a totally different essay for that major too..I think I'll just do that and hope for the best

just be honest - you'll get in if you really love it and you have decent grades.
