A school is judged by how good it is because of it’s acceptance rate now?

hm…interesting

I love how no one talked about penn until MP jumped into the conversation. I don’t fee like another flame war would be fun…
MP, Penn is a great school, you are lucky to be there.

MetaEzra suggested that the quality of ED applicants might not been as good this year. What do you guys think?

ED yield can’t be 100%. Internationals were allowed to apply ED this year and a lot of the international ED acceptees won’t get enough FA.

What I don’t get is how revenue would go up if more students matriculate. Yeah, it might go up a bit, but since Cornell provides such generous FA (a lot of it being grants), wouldn’t it be more of a loss?

It’s irrelevant what Penn will be, as it’s pretty irrelevant what any acceptance rate is (just look at Chicago) in assessing the quality of a school. It was just a hypothetical. Cornell’s not structured to have a sub 10% acceptance rate and never will be unless it suddenly becomes really popular for something and is inundated with tens of thousands of new applications. That’s pretty unrealistic.

At some point you should accept that you chose one school over another and move on - stop second guessing your decision. ;)

North Dakota sucks.

So does Columbia.

I won’t indulge in a flame war.
Penn WAS mentioned before I jumped on the thread. Also, Chendrix: I was referencing Penn’s RD yield, which is completely unrelated to ED. Regardless, note that ED always accepts the same percentage of class, so it has no effect on the overall yield. Please don’t drag me into something. And don’t get on your high horse; Cornell enjoys the same ED magnifying effect.

muerte, you do realize that you’re a joke (even among Penn people), right? I was talking to one of my friends who was accepted Penn ED and it came out that we both used College Confidential. The first thing she said to me was, “Have you seen the Penn ■■■■■…Pablo something? He’s ridiculous.” You come off as an arrogant prestige whore. Penn and Cornell are like apples and oranges. They’re completely different schools and people will choose the school that fits their needs best. You made your choice. I’m truly glad you like Penn and that it works for you. But the things you seem most concerned about, like “cross-admits” and the minutiae of the admissions process that only Eric Furda should be thinking about, are not what should make you happy/proud/whatever about being at Penn.

Is there some pavlov’s bell going on in here?? As soon as Upenn is mentioned, Muerteapablo comes in running, foaming at the mouth.

Chicago’s number went up because of the silly “Love Letter” an applicant wrote as his essay. NY Times ran with it and even referenced CC.

Cal state system as in the UC schools? Wow, and I thought the tuition rises and budget cuts would deter applicants. That really is something.

Cal State is not UC. UC is the University of California System. Everybody applied to Cal State because they don’t have a job.

Stop lying. You’re as bad as a Republican with your disinformation.

Last year Penn saw 3610 ED applicants, accepting 1083 of those students, comprising 48 percent of Penn’s entering class. In recent memory, Penn has always accepted close to 50 percent of its entering class ED.

Cornell has never accepted anywhere close to 48 percent of its class ED.

[MetaEzra – University Admits Record Number of ED Students](MetaEzra -- University Admits Record Number of ED Students)

The ‘numerical boost’ Cornell gets from its ED program in terms of acceptance rates and yield is nowhere close to what Penn gets.

Oh, I see what you did there. Hilarious.

Both Penn and Cornell are very good and comprehensive universities. While Penn may be marginally more selective, the difference is negligible. Also, Penn seems to appeal to the USNEWS rankings more than Cornell does; at least that is the perception.

When two universities are so close in selectivity as well as prestige, it should really come down to “fit.”

While I didn’t apply to either, I recognize that both universities hold their own academically speaking. When supporters of either school start bickering about which is better, that says something more about the people bickering than the schools themselves.

gets off soapbox

to be honest, cornell and penn are such different schools that applying to both is borderline silly.

I disagree. In many respects they are the most similar schools in the Ivy League.

Which is why some Penn students always have such a bone to pick with us. They would rather NOT be so similar to us, because of their own insecure feelings of superiority.

I know. They don’t even have a hockey team. And to add insult to injury, their basketball team has been atrocious for the past three years.
