hey incoming high school senior here. applying early decision to cornell. 2170 SAT (m-720, cr-730, w-720), subject tests 780 (math 2) and 750 (us history). Have an average to good gpa (school has not released). Will also probably be a national merit commended or semi depending on score (213) in Texas. I taught a 6th grade English class for 18 weeks and they all passed the TAKS test. I also shadowed a orthopedic surgeon for 18 weeks. I have lab experience (this summer and last summer) and will be included in at least two publications. What are my chances?

“average to good” GPA isn’t going to cut it. You need to be in the top 10% of your class to put yourself in position to have an average chance.

well by average i meant im not the val. I am in the top 3% of my graduating class

You will be a serious canidate. Your grades, class rigor, & test scores all apear to meet the threshold for acceptance. EC’s, letters of rec., essays, & “fit” with the specific college you are applying to within Cornell will be the deciding factors in admission.

well i’ve taken 7 ap classes in three years. i was planning on applying to the college of arts and sciences. wasnt sure what major though. actually was thinking about a major in history or a social science. any suggestions?

my parents also want me to retake my SAT in oct and try to surpass a 2200. Is this a good choice?

on retaking the SAT’s: only if you have no better usage of your time. Don’t neglect your essays!

Well you have a 1450 sat (Cornell doesn’t look at writing) which falls right about the the 50th percentile, so its not bad but it’s not impressive either. How many times have you taken the sat? And which college in Cornell are you applying to? I would say retake it if you are applying to the college of engineering or arts and sciences, if you haven’t taken too much already.

How do you comparewith otehrs at your school likely to apply to Cornell? If your school has a lot of legacies, you’ll need to up your game.

the 2170 is my second time taking the test. there are no legacies at my school. what college would be easier to get into? my plan was the arts and sciences but if that is not doable i can change

It is doable. What’s your major? You should probably retake, a 720 math is somewhat low.

my plan was to major in either a history or social science. What sub scores would be good to aim for?

aw guys come on, your responses are important to me. really need to know this stuff

You will have a good shot. Work hard on those essays, and good luck.

By the way guys, I got in! :)

Congrats! Did you end up applying to A&S?

Congrats!

Can I ask you what your GPA was? Which college did you apply to & which college is easier to get into?

I have a 2180 on SAT I (W-750, M-770, CR-660) and a 4.14 weighted GPA. Plan to retake SAT to improve my Reading score. What are my chances?

Congrats! You got in ED? Where else did you apply, and get decisions back from?

my gpa was around a 93 (nothing great) and I did apply early. I applied to the college of arts and sciences
