Cornell -> Columbia Transfer Chances?

Hey, my brother who is a Sophomore at Cornell, wanted to know transfer chances into Columbia U (im an incoming freshman at Cornell, btw and im not transferring).

He is aiming for the College:

Freshman Year:
First Semester GPA: 3.9
Second Semester GPA: 3.4
Total: 3.6 ish

SATs (do these matter anymore?):
760V, 720M, 730W

I understand it may be hard to say, but since he's coming from another ivy, would it give him better chances?

Transfer admissions between Ivies are even harder to assess than first year admission. It depends on first year class yield and other factors, so its not consistent. Brown's transfer acceptance rate has fluctuated from 5-30% over the past few years for example. My guess he has a shot but its far from certain. If he really wants to go to another tp school he should hedge his bets with a couple more applications.

i dont think he has a chance. unless his 2nd semester was taking like jr/sr level courses to explain the 3.4 (especially after the 3.9) then it will be hard for adcoms to ignore that i think

wrong post

I am sorry, he is not getting into Columbia with a 3.4 second semester gpa. I had a 3.9+ at a top 15 school (that has a higher sat average than Cornell) and got wlisted at Columbia and Dartmouth. I got into UPenn though, which has become increasingly impossible to get into as well, as slipper has suggested. Brown was very generous for like 4-5 years and then last year accepted like around 5 percent. This year, I think they took A LOT more.

I also had similar high school stats and a high SAT score. I had great ECs as well. I was applying to enter as a junior. I had a 3.9+ for every term at my current school, with half of those terms being a perfect 4.0. Good luck!

I really dont think the transfer admission process is as cut and paste as people tend to make it. I transferred to Columbia, i had a 4.0 cumulative but i think your friend should apply to other schools as well. I think even with a 3.4 in the second semester your friend can get into columbia, it depends on the classes taken, and also i think the admissions committee looks at the whole picture not just college gpa. good luck
