My brother is currently a sophomore at Boston University and he is planning to transfer to NYU for fall 2007. He currently has a 3.97 GPA in Boston University and about a 1300/1600...(High School SAT score)..and he is currrently in the SOM in Boston University. He has really good rec's + essay...and a average amount of extracurricular at Boston University.

What are his chances in getting into NYU Stern?
And would you recommend taking the SATs again?

Hes also thinking about some lower ivy leagues like columbia and cornell...do you think those are too much of a reach for him? THANKS!

i think he has a good shot, impressive college record...
columbia and cornell will be more of a reach, but he should still apply just to see

He has a really nice college rec but I don't know sterns transfer policies...anyone know?

Haha. I wouldn't consider Columbia a lower ivy. Anyways, he'll be applying to Cornell AEM I assume. CALS has a high transfer rate (50%) but AEM is an impacted major that's said to accept under 20% of applicants. Columbia accepts around 10% of transfer applicants.

Hardly easy. He's got a shot. I think he may be in at Stern (depending on how long he's been at BU), has a slight chance at Cornell, and will be rejected by Columbia.

My brother is a sophomore at BU...is there anything he can do to increase his chances?

He might want to take the new SAT, but I'm not sure exactly how much that'd sway things. The rest of his app is pretty awesome -- especially his close-to-perfect GPA at a real university, which would look nice to NYU.

Also, the transfer stats for NYU (33%):

Total number of transfer students who applied: 5,006

Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 1,673

for Columbia (11%):

Total number of transfer students who applied: 1,073

Total number of transfer students who were admitted: 95

kyledavid80 thanks for the stats....are the NYU stats for STERN? or just NYU

I think Stern is usually around 28%, but hear it's going to be harder this year due to space or something.

If your bro is a sophomore, that's great! As kyle said, his SAT is the weakest part, and when you consider that many Sternies that get in as freshman have a 1400 or better, it's a little low. But I hear BU is pretty tough on grade deflation and that the SOM is probably the toughest area of BU, so a 3.97 is great and far more relevant than his test scores.

Overall, I'd say in at NYU Stern, good shot at Cornell, and worth applying to Columbia, but don't count on anything as it's random. He's got the stats.

Thanks everyone for your help...=) The last thing I'm gonna ask is do you think I should tell my brother to talk to the NYU admissions officer...do you think this will help out? Like some people says it shows the college admissions officers that you are truly interested.

I guess if he can. As far as I've seen, NYU doesn't offer interviews and gets so many applications (even for transfer) that they will have a tough time remembering him if he comes in to chat.

thanks brand_182 for all the advice..=) I appreciate it.
