Cornell Early Decision

I’m applying early decision to Cornell this fall and I just wanted to list my stats and ask you guys what you thought and connect with some people who are also applying early.

I’m a senior at Konawaena High School in Hawaii, which is fairly competitive because not a lot of students apply to competitive schools from Hawaii and at my school only 19% go to college period.

While I am mostly Caucasian, I am also about 5% Hispanic and I listed it on my Common Application.

I have completed 3 AP classes and scored at least 3 on the tests, and am taking another 2 this year along with an early college program English class. My GPA is 4.05 and will probably be 4.1 Cum. after this year. I chose to report my ACT scores on the Common App, for which I got a 29 composite and 34 in the science. My Class rank is 2/150

As for my extra curriculars, I really don’t think I can be beat. I’m Senior Class President, Go Green Club President, Leo Club President, National Honor Society Vice President, Varsity Cross Country Captain, Varsity Track and Field Captain, and Varsity starter for soccer. I am also Captain of our schools state Science Bowl team and have interned at some medical offices around my town.

I know my scores aren’t that competitive, but I am not a good test taker. I’m applying to the college of Agriculture and Life sciences for Bio-Medical engineering and I have a pretty good hook. My brother was in a coma and lack of medical technology almost led to his death and inspired me to pursue a degree in Bio-Medical Engineering to help people. Obviously its much better than that but I don’t want to give away too much on here.

So I guess my main question is , do you think with good essays and my many extra curriculars, I have a good chance to get in? I think I have showed that I am super focused on science and good at it and hopefully they see that and are interested in me.

Also if you comment tell me some of your stats if youre applying ED Cornell and let me know if you think you’ll get in!

Move this to the chance page.
And if you get in buy a really heavy winter coat, a hat, a scarf, and some good warm boots!!!

If you don’t get into Cornell ED you should try for Carnegie Mellon. Their admissions officer makes a big deal that they admit from every single state. I’m sure they would consider the class president from Hawaii a find! I would suggest taking the ACT again to increase your composite score and to show you are willing to try a second (or third) time to get a better score.

Your brother being very sick is not a hook, but as a Hispanic and from HI are hooks.

Few questions?

  • how is it competitive if 80%+ don’t attend college?
  • you are not Hispanic (5%?)
  • why Cornell?

Your 29 ACT is a problem. Your ECs are very good, but MANY applicants will have ones that are equally impressive. Anyones guess if the rest of your resume can overcome your ACT score.

Are you low-income or a first-generation college student?

I think your ACT is a bit low for bio med engineering. And @KathleenA, the ACT is a bit on the side for CMU engineering to be sure.

Being from Hawaii is a plus, though. Don’t understand why, if you say your HS is competitive, only 19% go to college.

Both
Low Income and First Gen

So, a great-great-grandparent was from a Spanish-speaking country (your grandparent’s grandparent)?

@brantly Yes, my dads mother was about 60% Spanish from Spain, and her mother was 100% and her father was just slightly Hispanic.
