A²+B²=C². 30, 60°, 90°. Cosx=a/b. The Sin Law. The number of possibilities to find a side of a 3-sided figure truly fascinated me. The endless ways to solve math fueled me to search for more possible ways to solve a simple to a complex problem. After I completed geometry, I thought I mastered every ways to solve all sides, areas, shapes etc, until I came face to face with trigonometry.
Every math problem I encountered, “an” answer was not enough for me. I needed “all” answers. I bugged my pre-calculus teacher almost daily with questions until I emptied out all the possibilities to solve the problem in her. Every lesson, the questions I had exponentially increased, as I was flanked with even more problems. After every lesson, I defeated each problem until I fully comprehended each topic. I have dreams that I must accomplish. Math is not the only subject that I wish to master, but also hospitality. I find great satisfaction even helping others in need. If it’s either lending someone a pencil, to assisting my grandpa up the stairs, I feel like I have achieved something great by supporting others.
Currently in AP Calculus, my passion still grows. With the knowledge I received, I use these mathematical skills to my everyday use. Four days ago, I was in the car with the slowest driver in America. My mother. Without looking at the speedometer, I tried to guess the speed of our car. Using a simple (Rate x Time=Distance) formula, I counted thirteen seconds for her to drive a block. The distance of a block seemed 300ft. With these limited information, I estimated her speed to be sixteen mph. As I looked at the speedometer, I was satisfied with my estimation, which was only off by four mph, but not with my mother’s driving. On a 30 mph road, she was trotting down the street 20 mph. At least I knew I would never get into a car accident whenever she drives. Hopefully…

Consider the academic programs in the school/college you indicated above. How will you utilize them to further explore your intended major or field of interest, or general academic interests if you’re undecided?

I did not know integrating both my passions for business and hospitality was possible until a friend of mine that graduated from Cornell introduced School of Hotel Administration to me. Ever since 8th grade, I have always wanted to manage a restaurant. Every time I walk into a restaurant, I see people eagerly waiting to be served. My dream is to serve the people with the best service and food I can possibly offer. Only Cornell can fulfill my life long dream. Through the core curriculums, they will prepare me to master management and hospitality. To be specific, I am eager to take Restaurant Management course. It will give me an insight view on how to manage a restaurant, my future goal as a job. Another course I wish to take is Introduction to Food Service Operations. This course will introduce me the fundamentals to succeed in the restaurant management business. With the professors who are experts in their area available to me, I will use every opportunity to gain the most to prosper in the real world. Cornell School of Hotel Administration will also introduce me to other undergraduate leaders who have similar goals as me, and I plan to help them succeed as they help me. Not only will Cornell give me the best educations to thrive, but will also benefit from me. Using what I learned here, I will be able to represent Cornell in the future in the business world through my endeavors. The elite academic program is not the only thing that wants me to attend Cornell, but the athletic program as well. I am a varsity track runner that was ranked top 15 in the county last year, and I want to continue running at Cornell. I want to persist to be a well-rounded student and Cornell will help me prosper athletically, academically, and also musically. I desire to be part of the Cornell community, and push myself achieve my goals.

You realize that you're applying to the School of Hotel Administration, one of the most selective programs at Cornell and a school looking for students who know exactly what they want to do in life. In your career essay, you have to talk about your interest in business and/or hotel management...focusing on math will not tell the admissions committee anything about you and will make them wonder why you're not applying to Arts and Sciences or some other program if you love math so much.

can i write about my passion for business then? It says intellectual.. is business intellectual
