Cornell Housing (graduate students)

which area is the best for housing for graduate students? is it better to stay on campus or go off campus? Downtown, Collegetown, West Campus, or North Campus? Which is more exciting and less depressing? And which is more feasible in terms of transportation to and from campus (by walk/bus).

I went to Cornell for ugrad and I'm not that familiar with graduate housing. However, the official graduate dorms are a very long way from campus (about 15-20 minute walk up an extremely steep hill). The walk can be exhausting and incredibly annoying to the point where you dread going back to your room b/c you'll have to make the walk when you want to leave again (I endured almost the same one for 3 years). I think there are some apartments mostly for grad students on Nrtoh Campus, which is also extremely far from campus. Collegetown is the closest place, but it's tough to get space there b/c everyone wants to live there. It's very lively and teeming with partiers and bar frequenters many nights.

I wonder if that's planning on Cornell's part to keep their grad students in the labs. ;)
